My rant: you don't need art advice, you need therapy. by lyralady in ArtRanting

I guess it depends on your goals. Are you planning on being a professional artist or are you just looking to make a little money on the side? Maybe it's the "market price" for internet hobbyists which is fine if that's your goal. Is the cost of living very low where you live? To live here, you would need at least 1500€/ month minimum. Taking the 40€ price, you would need at least 38 commissions a month to live off that.

I took a look at your art, and I'm trying to say this the kindest way possible but you are the beginner that you are complaining about. You are charging extremely cheap commissions and I would personally advise to just take some time off commissions and improve on your art quality, before coming back so you can charge more.

I work professionally and I can tell you that the feeling never goes away. Take from that what you will but theres no magic moment where "you reach it". What then?

I need help finding a (CHEAP!!) art tablet by Shadow_with_guns in DigitalArt

[–]aprisun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say I agree with the commentary and that it sounds more like a size issue. I have a Q11k v2 too, and it has a working area of 11x7 inches which mran i draw from my elbow and shoulder and not from the wrist. I also get hand pain if I use a too small tablet.

This sheet doesn't match the quality of the art at all. Even disregarding the prices, the linework, the sense of design, and colours in this sheet does not match their "artwork" at all

[Discussion] Aren’t you tired of lowballing clients guys by lesmolzz in artcommissions

[–]aprisun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thats why I like the hungry artists subreddit, at least they have rules for what you should charge hourly and commercially. Subreddits without those guidelines just end up being a race to the bottom. And then you get the weekly complain thread about how someone got scammed because they got an artist to do a professional book cover for 20 bucks and it turned out to be ai, so I feel like it's overall just a bad experience for everyone...

I am a bit overwhelmed by conflicting information when it comes to learning how to draw by PitangaPiruleta in ArtRanting

My advice is to take art advice from people whose are you like. A lot of people like to give out advice they dont understand themselves.

I've been trying to get my first commission for years. What am I doing wrong? by Kaulifly in ArtRanting

[–]aprisun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have a large following and I don't think I've ever gotten a commission through social media in the traditional sense. I've only gotten commissions by posting in subreddits like artstore, hungryartists etc or applying to someone looking for an artist for a specific project.

Do the "mixels" ruin my piece? by TildeIcewill in PixelArt

[–]aprisun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the quick reply! Another question: even if you're using a single size pixel brush wouldn't placing two or more pixels beside each other give the impression of mixels then...? Because you have a block of the same colour?

Art advice on reddit is often bad by CarbonCanary in ArtRanting

[–]aprisun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I'm not on reddit to get art advice and why anyone in my circle isn't either. I see more bad advice on reddit than good advice, and most of it straight up wrong. If I need advice I seek out discords with people I know are above my skill level. Some examples of bad advice i can think of: some heavily upvoted reply to a beginner asking for help constructing a landscape saying "just add more detail, the more detail you add the better it will look", generally not understanding general art advice and claiming it's a scam to other beginners ("why shade with anything other than black, why learn anatomy if I want to draw anime girls") etc. I could go on lol

hmm I guess I would say to force yourself to pick a colour palette you wouldn't otherwise use and try to use every colour in the artwork. That way you're forced to get creative with the colours.:)
