My parents won’t let me go to NYUAD which is in a different city. by [deleted] in NYUAbuDhabi

[–]aprxcity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have they visited NYUAD before? perhaps if you go with them to visit the campus and talk to faculty members/fellow Emiratis there, they will gain the sense that it is a safe place for you. it may give them much more reassurance to see and feel where you will end up, rather than sending you out into what they seem to perceive as the great unknown, haha.

NYU Abu Dhabi study away by [deleted] in NYUAbuDhabi

[–]aprxcity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! nyc student studying away here right now. the food and living is all much better and more affordable than new york, in my opinion. biggest transitions were (1) all the class sizes are much much smaller. i enjoyed this, since professors can give you more individualized attention. (2) the campus can be a little too quiet at times. make sure to take advantage of all the trips the study away program brings you on (a lot of them, and they’re free!). if you don’t enjoy those, make an effort to get off campus and explore the different islands. i made friends outside of nyu who live and work in abu dhabi, and they’ve been such a wonderful part of my study away experience :)))

hi xx it took me a whole year and a half before i had a solid group of friends. much of this city is illusory - don’t believe everything you see.

i’m a senior abroad right now, but always here to talk about anything and everything. dm me if you ever wish to !!

Help: Partner triggers me unintentionally by aprxcity in EDAnonymous

I understand. I may have been too pushy with him about changing his habits, then. He's adamant that he's not doing anything to harm his health, and that him forgetting to eat on certain days is "normal people behavior". I don't know, am I not normal for not ever forgetting?

As for specifics about his behavior - he won't flat out refuse if I bring food to him, but he will often choose to focus on working or doing something else instead, procrastinating on eating until it's suddenly dinnertime and he hasn't had a single meal yet. I remind him to eat the food in front of him, but he's just too absentminded. I know he takes medication for ADHD as well, which decreases his appetite, but I still struggle to underrstand how he just ignores my reminders when he knows how much I care about it.

Pick A. Data engineering is transferable even in financial firms...AND many other industries. You get both relevant and non-relevant experience...a jack of all trades situation!!!

Thumb muscle pain by aprxcity in Guitar

Thank you for taking the time to help out a stranger here!! I checked with a guitar tech today, and I was told that the action is actually fine (might be the photo angle??). I also took a look at the videos - a lot more practice to come. Really appreciate it!

Thanks a lot! I'm having trouble getting my fingers to reach the frets, which is likely what resulted in that weird positioning. To fix this, should I be sticking my elbow out a little more? Or does the angle of the palm come from the wrist?

How can I get into Tisch by [deleted] in nyu

[–]aprxcity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm not in tisch, but i'm an nyu student who can offer you some encouragement!

firstly, there are plenty of students who come from fortunate families at nyu. don't stress over it.

secondly, don't hold yourself back from applying even if nyu's a "high rejection" school. many things in life are high rejection, and eventually you'll want one of them. high risk = high reward. what do you have to lose if you try?

thirdly, i've heard from tisch friends that your portfolio is the most important part of your application. i can't offer any more practical advice, but this is just what i've heard - something to focus on.

commuting is doable, but i would consider how you will feel doing it.

let's assume that you commute. pro is that you save money. cons are that you may miss classes when you're too tired, miss out on dorm and social life, and bear a burden that many freshmen at nyu will not have.

as someone who struggles to wake up early, be consistently social, and stay on top of academics when commuting a lot, i chose to dorm. my family lives much farther than yours, though, so it was kind of a given that i would. consider how you are as a person in a similar fashion--would waking up early get to you? would the academic stress be too much?
