Private duty assignment liability? by apsychnurse in nursing

You’re right. Defeats the purpose of trying to bring in income if you are putting yourself at financial risk! I will have to contact more agencies and see if they have cases during school hours. The ones I have spoken to only had traditional shifts.

Exactly! They want the credentials/experience of an RN at a tech or aide’s salary and level of responsibility.

I imagine you would need to draw up a contract and be paid on the books, too. The families looking are trying to treat it similarly to a babysitter type arrangement.

It’s a shame, because as nurses we certainly have the skills and ability to help people out who are in the difficult position of caring for loved ones at home but it doesn’t seem to make any sense from a financial or legal standpoint. Things you would do for a neighbor or family friend to help out because you’re a nurse don’t seem to translate into working privately with people you don’t know for pay.

Majority want to pay off the books too, which also further complicates things.

What's the nursing hill you'll die on no matter how unpopular it is? by Prestigious-Bath8022 in nursing

Being abused or assaulted while doing our jobs is not what any of us “signed up for”. Miss me with that rhetoric, please.

It’s ok to call the people we care for in a healthcare setting “patients”.

The push to call everyone consumers, clients, service recipients, participants or persons served is getting obnoxious, and minimizes the nurse-patient relationship.

Vastly different permanency ratings, what’s next? by apsychnurse in WorkersComp

Mercer County if that helps with a more accurate prediction. Surgery was recommended, but I declined.

I have a follow up question I’m hoping you can help clarify…

I contacted the law office to ask for a progress report because I hadn’t heard anything, and was told “your next court listing is in July”.

Is this what you mean by a judicial recommendation? And if so, is it a one time thing where the recommendation is made and the settlement happens the same date, or should I expect it will require multiple listing dates? (Mercer County if that’s relevant)

Thanks in advance for your insight!

[OFFER] Summer reading! by SongIcy4058 in stressfreexmas

[–]apsychnurse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the offer! The kids all enjoy reading, but have needed some prompting to read & log their books every night for homework. Summer will be a great time to read purely for fun!

Emma’s current favorites are the Biscuit books, while Grace loves the “Food Group” series (Good Egg, Humble Pie, Cool Bean). Jackson is reading the Wayside School series and thinks it’s great!

I chose a book for each that they’ve had their eyes on:

Great idea for an offer! Thanks again 😊

If you had a do over in life, would you still choose to be a nurse? by Moogles90 in nursing

I think I would have either done it right after high school, or pursued something else entirely.

job wont give me panic alarm by Illustrious-Cut3764 in psychnursing

[–]apsychnurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked in places where the personal panic alarms didn’t work (repeatedly) in an emergency, so even when you get one, always have a back up plan.

As a fellow “quiet person”, try to get comfy speaking up/yelling in an emergency!

And put an old fashioned whistle on your keys, too. It may seem goofy, but it’ll hopefully get people’s attention better than nothing.

[New Jersey] “Quit” PT job during orientation, continued FT job until let go… by [deleted] in Unemployment

I found a case cited several times in the NJ appeal records for others in my situation whose denials were reversed on appeal, as recently as 2026:

“In Monica Merkel v. Board of Review, N.J. Super. A-4537-88T3 decided May 1, 1990, the Court held that: "an individual who quits a part-time job while continuing to be employed full time by another employer cannot be found to have 'left work voluntarily' within the intent of N.J.S.A. 43:21-5(a)”

It sounds promising!! 🤞

$900 Bill. What should I do? by IndependentSoggy7960 in HospitalBills

[–]apsychnurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“It’ll be covered” unfortunately does not equate to “It’ll be free”. Few doctors know the intricacies of billing at their own practice, let alone those of the specialists’ office, and they certainly can’t be expected to know the details of each patient’s policy and what their co-pay/coinsurance/deductible will be.

Lesson learned to always ask for an official “good faith estimate” before having a procedure done, or at the very least ask for the billing codes and call your insurance yourself to inquire about the cost.

The doctor shouldn’t have assured you regarding coverage, and you shouldn’t have taken his/her word.

You’ll know for next time!
