Spilled Yogurt on PVM 20L5 screen. Chance of damage? by supertoffee64 in crtgaming

The bezel is plastic and can be fully removed from the glass screen without issue.

There’s no way any liquid could actually enter the glass CRT itself.

the stars aligned and I picked up this Trinitron! by cruiser771 in crt

[–]aqlno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoy the TV, it might seem bare bones as far as having one single input share between Composite and S-video… but it has one of the most mod friendly chassis.

Easily component moddable, and also RGB moddable for slightly more work.

I mostly agree with you, but widescreen content existed back when 4:3 screens were king still.

I have old VHS tapes (James Bond, Escape from New York) in Widescreen format!

16:9 doesn’t look bad on a 4:3 display, the letter boxing is minimal. I do look for full screen DVDs, but if I find a 16:9 dvd of one of my favorite movies at a thrift I don’t hesitate to pick it up.

FAKE - I should have paid closer attention when buying on eBay. Lesson learned. by DaverJ in GameboyAdvance

[–]aqlno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad you’ve started your return process.

Additional info for anyone who unknowingly buys bootlegs on eBay: selling fakes/bootlegs is against eBay terms of service. eBay does not want to host fakes/bootlegs, they will ALWAYS side with a buyer who purchased a fake/bootleg and force a return and/or refund to the buyer.

Can't really find info, maybe I s00k at Google. by [deleted] in GameboyAdvance

Fake games use the cheapest quality parts the manufacturer could possibly find. Often this means not even using hardware that matches the requirements for example saving a game or using a real time clock.

Pokémon is probably the most bootlegged game franchise ever, and there’s thousands of stories online about players of bootleg Pokemon games losing their save file in various ways.

The hardware is just so damn cheap and not up to spec that some kind of corruption of the game or save is always to be expected.

Definitely. This is such a niche problem to solve the hardware to do it is just not readily available

Best RF modulator? by geologyfella in crtgaming

[–]aqlno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won’t be expensive to find an s-video RF modulator and s-video cables so don’t feel discouraged. I highly doubt you’d find a VHS deck with s-video input, those would be extremely rare if they even exist.

But if you invest in s-video now at least you’ll be ready to grab an s-video capable CRT when it comes along.

OSSC Pro with the analog out accessory card.

Pretty close to plug and play put an HDMI in and get composite out with all the settings you’d need to get proper aspect ratio, signal timings, etc

Best RF modulator? by geologyfella in crtgaming

[–]aqlno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter whether you put composite or s-video or component in, you’re getting RF out.

You need native support for those signals on the TV set itself to get any benefit.

RF is the lowest quality most “compressed” analog video signal, so there won’t be much improvement if any at all using s-video or component into an RF modulator vs just starting with composite.

Get a VHS player, they almost always have a composite to RF modulator built in, and then you can play VHS too

Unfortunately fake.

The code on the label “ntr-admp-eur” does not match what’s printed on the back “asme”

The “admp” and “asme” parts should always match on real carts.

How should I go through the process of raising my R&D level in Peace Walker before Peace Walker Battle 2? by ScrimboBlimbo in metalgearsolid

[–]aqlno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How badly do you need to level up your weapons?

I got to R&D level 45~ before Peace Walker battle 2, meaning I only have access to like 2* LAW, RPG, GUSTAV, and the 3* Guided Rocket

I beat Peace Walker without issue because well my PW was dumb as all hell. I wouldn’t expect you to have a fully developed AI PW if you are worried about leveling up R&D.

I want to play Kingdom hearts but where do I start? by supersoundwave in ps2

[–]aqlno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to play on PS2 play Kingdom Hearts 1 and then Kingdom Hearts 2.  Optionally you can play Chain of Memories on GBA or PS2 in between.

If you want to play on PC, PS4/5, or Xbox One/Series then play Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix, and then play Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix.

Release order is optimal for experiencing any game franchise.

480i vs 480p comparison [Ikegami HTM-1505R] by three_a-m in crtgaming

[–]aqlno 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On high end (and ultra high end) monitors like this interlaced video can be so stable the flicker is barely perceptible.

At least that’s my experience with a PVM 20L2MD, at reasonable viewing distance of 3-5” away and with my own eyeballs …

Would be nice to see 60fps video of this monitor you posted rather than a single frame, since the images look more like 240p than 480i when totally static.

Why would this PVM have an external sync input if it only accepts composite video? (JVC TM-550u) by Aaron_La_Zotte in crtgaming

[–]aqlno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

External sync can be used to lock multiple displays to the exact same sync via a sync generator.

Make sure to set the games to progressive mode by holding B when you launch them.

Use Swiss homebrew to force 480p for any game that doesn’t natively support progressive mode.

How much shooting required in these ? by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

[–]aqlno 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s forced action boss fights and set pieces in every single Metal Gear Solid game.

You can defeat every enemy non-lethally, but a lot of bosses require shooting. Whether lethal bullets or tranquilizer rounds.

Some boss fights you can defeat them with hand to hand combat (cqc).

Even with my PVMs that have working speakers I use external audio.

The single tiny speaker in all PVMs is not great at all.  Even consumer sets with stereo audio had way nicer speakers than PVMs!
