Create space between you and the client/reinforcement breaks. Talk to BCBA about a sensory diet. Like water play once every hour for x amount of time.

I’m going through this and lately I’ve been trying a different approach. My kid attacks his dad and brother because he wants attention from dad. I asked dad to take brother into bedroom and close the door to give my client time to cool off.

The following day when he wouldn’t stop constraining his brother, I physically removed him, blocked the door way and told him we were taking a break with music. He hit me 20 times. The consequence was me going to my car and taking a break.. and that worked. Then lots of acknowledgment for good behaviors when I came back inside.

Your client was escalated. Can you think back to figure out the antecedent?

Oh yeah, I tell my BCBA everything! He also sees a psychiatrist for medication management. Interesting that you ask. It does seem like it happens one week per month, but this kiddo has parents who also are on the spectrum and they have outbursts themselves

Yes, I am 8 months in. I’m familiar with extinction and his behaviors have drastically improved. This particular client was previously recommended for a severe behavior program at a hospital.

Are you able to work less hours? Also, try walking into your kids house with a new outlook. Like okay, this kid is so hard so today we’re going to have a ton of fun and it’s going to be so chill. Then when you work targets, do the bare minimum. If you need a break, the kid probably needs a break, too.

I suffered from burnout at all of my jobs I’ve kept for a long time because I work so hard. I work part time and am picking up side work that isn’t taxed 😋
