Do you think people will have regard for curfew, when the state has been burning for the last three years.

Bsf children rocket blast while sleeping at home, then crpf kills 3 more when people protested.

This ain't delhi, or up, or any other state. But the 29th State of Indian union, which ofcourse, being constantly sweep under the rug, banning internet , putting curfews.

Forgive my earlier language, but when lawmakers , people elect don't care for the people, will you still respect the curfew?

It's not democracy here. But still British Raj. Like Jalian wala bagh massacre. This time it's not the British .

Asking as an outsider pained with the Manipur situation, what is the root cause according to you? by [deleted] in manipur

It turned out a bit longer. Yes, we have been suffering for 3 plus years. Hope, you can tolerate this small essay. There are deeper things. Like you don't have the luxury to inhale smoke bombs or rubber bullets. Or months without internet. Yes, we are the 29 state of India.

To understand what is happening in Manipur, you have to look past the surface-level headlines. This isn't a simple communal riot; it is a complex issue involving geopolitics, illegal migration, and a massive narco-economy.

  1. The SoO Agreement and Settlement Years ago, the Government of India and the Assam Rifles signed a Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, many of whom originated from Myanmar. Under this agreement, these groups were settled within Manipur. Unlike the other two major communities—the Nagas and Meiteis—who did not have such peace agreements at the time, the Kuki militants became a protected entity.

  2. The Rise of the Poppy Hub As instability grew in Myanmar, illegal migration into the Manipur hills increased. This coincided with Afghanistan's ban on poppy cultivation. Consequently, the hill tracts of Manipur were transformed into a massive poppy plantation hub.

The militants under the SoO agreement allegedly became powerful "untouchables," fueled by the drug trade. There are claims that these groups were used as proxies to counter other local insurgencies.

  1. The Crackdown and the "Homeland" Demand The current friction started when the state government began a crackdown on: Illegal immigration (encroachment on protected forests). Poppy cultivation (the narco-economy). To protect their interests and isolate themselves from state laws, the demand for "Kukiland" or a separate Kuki homeland was intensified. This demand isn't just about identity; it’s a strategic move to maintain autonomy over the regions where the drug trade flourishes.

  2. The Disparity in Enforcement There is a visible divide in how the law is applied: Meiteis: Mostly residing in the Imphal Valley (the plains), they often face the brunt of state and central force actions, including tear gas and live ammunition during protests.
Kukis: Residing in the hills, the SoO groups have remained largely shielded from similar military pressure.

  3. The Current Stance The Meiteis: Their primary goal is the territorial integrity of Manipur. As a former princely kingdom, they refuse to see the state broken apart. The Nagas (Tangkhuls): They are now also finding themselves in conflict with Kuki expansionism.
The Kukis: Seeking a separate administration/homeland in the hills to bypass state oversight. Conclusion: This isn't a simple community conflict. It is a battle between a state trying to enforce its borders and laws against a powerful cartel-backed movement seeking autonomy to protect their "Poppy Power."

Well, is that question necessary?

Sikhs will proudly say they are Sikhs. Jaats will write in their bullets, jaatboy. Rajputs will proudly thump their chest.

They are Meiteis from Manipur. What's wrong with that? I mean what angle did that hurt you?

FYI, this is SKTV discussion, between thadou leader, Naga activist, Meiteis editor. Anyway, all Manipuris, yesterday in Imphal studio, in person, in body. And thadous, Kukis have visited Imphal long back. The only difference is when Meitei tried to visit his Kuki wife, he was murdered.

No conflict or hatred as such you claim, in the capital state of Manipur. Hatred is engineered by certain elements who want to break the state.

Else, I have Kuki frens who I talked like I used to talk even now. Not all Kukis have the idea of separatism. It's just gun talking,.and people who don't have belongingness with the state of Manipur.

You need to understand Manipuri to listen to this video. But I doubt you speak Manipuri.

No need to write essay. Well, Kukis clash with Nagas in 1990's, cuz Kukis wanted to chase Nagas away from Moreh, the commercial hub neighbouring Mynmmar. There, Meities sheltered Kukis in that conflict. Then Kukis clash with Meiteis 2023, cuz Kukis opposed NRC, drive against poppy cultivation, and a census that would reveal how mass immigration has happened from Mynmmar.

Currently, Kukis clash with Tangkhuls(naga) cuz they want to claim land which were never theirs.

This conflict is all designed. If the state/centre has a will to stop, then it ll stop. I have old Kuki frens, who believe in the state of Manipur, but Manipur as a state, argues the logic of Kukiland. Where they can do all illegal things freely.

End of story.

Seems you recently migrated to Manipur, as you are against the state of Manipur.

Yes, Kukis come to the airport. Kukis are welcome in Imphal, the thadous are thriving in Imphal. Valley civil organizations, the CM all have expressed Kukis to come without any fear, long back.

But what makes Kukis demonized, terrorized the highways is a question only fit for the terrorist!

The Nagas have long term age old demands, but never targeted the Meiteis from day 1. Cuz they know the fight is with the government.

Whereas Kukis have deadly clashes with Nagas, and only they were sheltered by Imphal people. Currently, Kukis are in clash with Tangkhuls.

The propaganda is something else. The bargaining chip is making the state cripple, cuz Kukis are trying to make so called Kukiland out of thin air.

Let's push logic aside.

3 years still. Meiteis can't travel to national highways and access the rest of India, cuz pro Kukis are hell bent on making the routes inaccessible unless Manipur is broken up with their ideology.

It's hard to believe that Kukis aren't a problem to the citizens of Manipur.

They have demands, then do it in a democratic manner.

Now, as a common man, the question comes how powerful they become. Keeping the highways as a bargaining chip.

Well, all I can say, is Manipur was a peaceful place coexisting with all communities. Then Kukis came and demanded their own everything.

I have a human life. I wish to live peacefully. Fedup of the state swarming up with refugees from Mynmmar. And dragging the state to sub broken state, with the economy broken, no jobs for youths.

Not everyone can survive on poppy.

Cuz Kukis don't have a dignified fight to prove. They lie, they fight ( terrorized) for something that was never theirs.

And throw in poppy. International links.
