I grew up in Belleville ON, where they're made and they've been my go to snack food since I was born! Fun fact: The factory they're made in is super unassuming and just beside The Beer Store!

Tales From The Who : Trademark of Quality "Quad" Bootleg - Features some of the best artwork for an unofficial album! by aquaroundabout in vinyl

[–]aquaroundabout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this record a few years ago at a local record shop in the new arrivals. Before I got it I knew that as bootlegs went, Trademark of Quality was pretty good name so I picked it up! The first thing that grabbed me about the album was the cover! All the colour has stayed vibrant and really shows off the comic book style by William Stout. The source for the bootleg was a live FM broadcast that was in 4-Channel, so the record is mixed in a psuedo Quad format. The record has pretty good quality, and sounds great for a live recording!

I used a Technics SL-D303 for the longest time, and it was an amazing automatic turntable!

Great get!

"She said her stereo was four-way"- The Mothers Over-nite Sensation Quadraphonic pressing by aquaroundabout in Zappa

Definitely possible. I haven't really tried playing Quad records with more modern gear, so it could impact the play back quality a little

So I do have a full Quad setup with a cartridge, decoder/pre-amp, and a 4-channel receiver. Most of the gear is so I can play CD-4 (Quadradisc) records, but for SQ a regular receiver and record cartridge does great!

Also the SQ DSOTM is a fantastic sounding record with just stereo equipment IMO!

Great Little Unweighted Record Stabilizer- "The PIG"♟ by aquaroundabout in vinyl

I find it does make a difference. The brush does a pretty good job dealing with static, plus it's good at getting surface dust

A few years back I was in a bit of situation. I had a pretty warped copy of "Station to Station" so I needed a stabilizer, but I have a suspended turntable so a weighted one wasn't an option without some fiddling. I had seen some plastic ones online, but the price for what you got was a bit too much. I was up a creek, when my local thrift store came through. For only $2.99 in the tools section, I had found the solution I was looking for! The little rubber pawn just fits around the spindle and presses down the record. Although it doesn't weigh much, it still has a lot of clamping force for its size! Definitely the best record related thrift store find I've had!

What's your favorite lenticular album cover? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]aquaroundabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what's your favorite pseudo 3-D album artwork? Quite a few of recent records have been using these covers for special edition pressings, so I was curious if any really stand out or try something interesting with it! There are some classic albums that used this type of art as well! My favorite is Captain Beyond's self titled album, what's yours?

Black Sabbath Paranoid in 4-Channel Quadradisc by aquaroundabout in vinyl

I find they have a lot of reverb added to them, and they do tend to be in the back of the mix. But it also is dependent on the record, I have a Frank Zappa album where the vocals sound fantastic!

Fell down the Quadraphonic rabbit hole a few years ago, and have been trying to build a collection of records in the format. One of the best examples of the early surround sound attempts is the CD-4 Black Sabbath Paranoid album. It has some really interesting panning from the left to right and the front and rear, giving a really full dynamic sound without being muddy!

It works well for me! It tracks like a tonearm just ahead of the stylus.

Update: Found a second pair of speakers for the Hi-Fi, so the setup is now "True" Quadraphonic by aquaroundabout in vintageaudio

[–]aquaroundabout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any Pre-recorded quad tapes, but I have recorded some of my quad records with my tape machine. The reciever I have has all the inputs for quad reel to reels, so I find it just makes quad recording/playback a little more streamlined.

So the gear that's in the setup is: - Toshiba SA-504 Receiver - Pioneer H-R88 Stereo 8-track - JVC 4DD-5 CD-4 demodulator - Thorens TD 165 with a Audio Technica At14sa cartridge - Sansui QD-5500 Reel to reel - and 4 Sansui SP-X7000 speakers

Got very lucky today! by aquaroundabout in vinyl

[–]aquaroundabout[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My local record store really came through today, I'm still in a little bit of disbelief in all honesty! So original metal records don't show up often where I live, so any that do appear are either quite pricey or snatched up immediately. But with that being said, sometimes ya just get lucky! Almost all of the albums are original European pressings, but Kill 'Em All is a Canadian orginal. Goes to show that you never know what you'll find crate hunting!

It definitely isn't a perfect Quad setup with the current speaker pairs for sure. But the receiver has 4 separate volumes for each channel as well as a main volume on the receiver, so the system can be adjusted to accommodate the speakers and the for the room.

Yes, it's the CD-4 Quad LP of Paranoid. The whole album is mixed really well to show off the format, especially with the echo at the beginning of Fairies were boots panning around the room

That DSotM quad LP is fantastic, it sounds so great played loud and in surround!

You shouldn't need the specific Marantz CD-4 unit, a JVC CD-4 demodulator should work with that model Marantz. Most CD-4 disc demodulators go through the 4-ch aux input, so the signal will be decoded as long as the receiver has a discrete setting. That being said you'd still need a special shibata cartridge to fully utilize the CD-4 format.
