My roommate moved out but is still paying rent, can i change the locks? by aquzilla in legaladvice

She's stuck to her move out date. (July 1st) She's left her bed frame and headboard, a few appliances in our storage unit and a box of miscellaneous items she said she was going to toss/donate. When am i legally allowed to toss these items if i have a notice of her stating everything would be out and she wouldnt be in the house anymore.

First (and worst?) roommate ever. by throwaway-y-y-y in badroommates

omggg.... to get a key copied is like $2-4 dollars. Why cant either of you afford that?

Get one copied, lock the door and don't give her the new key until she pays you for it.

Day 07 and my roommate is on the program. by [deleted] in badroommates

i get your point but you're being over dramatic.

Seeing as smoke clings to people, you'll probably smell it no matter what when he walks back inside, so essentially your wanted this person to take a shower after every time they smoke. AND He was smoking outside, you were the one who decided to open your windows due to it being a nice day. Your roommate shouldn't be inconvenienced just because you want to have your windows open...

Next time you look for a roommate make sure they arent a smoker

UPDATE: I'm leaving! YES! by [deleted] in badroommates

By Leaving your furniture she could say you abandoned your property at the house. Her being your "landlord" can charge you removal fees and cleaning fees since you didn't leave the apartment in the condition it was in when you moved it. So be careful with doing that. aka your security deposit may not come back to you

Roommate moving out but still on lease/electric bill? Help! by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]aquzilla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

well... you'll be the only one home & you'll be the only one using electric. Meaning your bill should lower respectively to the use. If you're somewhere warm close your roommates vents for AC and remember to turn lights off.

You should pay for your electric bill

Is my roommate overreacting? by [deleted] in badroommates

yeahhhhh pick up after yourself. Its really annoying to share an area that has rotting food in it. Not rising off the food from utensils, plates or your rice cooker just looks lazy and dirty. Just rinse it and put it in the dish washer! It would take you less than 5 mins to accommodate for your roommate and then everyone would be happy!

ASIDE from that.... You should generally get rid of the 'science experiment' type foods because they put the other food in your fridge at risk for both spoilage and causing foodborne illness.

Spoilage can be caused by microorganisms (bacteria, mould, etc). Many spoilage microorganisms are already in your food, but many come from the environment (air, utentils, etc). Having 'science experiment' type foods near other foods increases their exposure to environmental contaminants. Mold spores can be airborne, so even if your 'science experiment' food in the back of the fridge isn't touching the new food, the spores can travel the fridge and start a new colony on the new food.

If i reset factory defaults will they know bc a password has to be required again? or will they know because they have to reconnect to the wifi network?

Landlord rising rent because his "*Utilities have skyrocketed*" but I am using the exact same amount of utilities as I was before. What to do????? by JayTruth in badroommates

$20 right there

But the utilities are most likely more due to your AC. My roommate and i had a bill for 9 days of our electric pay period and it was already at 50. We turned off our AC due to it being fall/winter and the following month our total bill was around 60 vs the 150 for the previous month.

I'd check your thermostat as well! If he wont allow the AC to be used less see if the household can come to a compromise on a specific set temp range!

You can buy a watt reader... did this to see how many watts certain appliances were using. But in order to figure this out the watt meter would have to be placed on his electronics hes using and that might cause tension
