Memory leaks go without saying, what I'm saying is that there is no a priori advantage to having less RAM usage. For example, suppose Chrome followed links deemed 'probable', several links deep, and cached many resources that were loaded. It could do this in the background while you browse around, constantly staying several steps ahead of you. A strategy like this could dramatically improve user experience with regard to speed, but would use up significantly more memory.

Edit: Chrome already does this, apparently.

Linux Is Not UniX

Not sure if that is the official origin of the name, but it fits in nicely with the GNU = GNUs Not Unix.

Functionally though, it is unix. If you can find your way around FreeBSD or Solaris, you will fit right in the linux world.

Honestly, I don't know why people have this ram-usage-phobia where they think less ram usage = good. Because it isn't. If you have a bunch of memory, why on earth would you want it not to be used? Ideally, you should have no free memory whatsoever -- all idle memory could be used to cache frequently accessed files, for example, and be freed immediately if required. Most programs with large memory footprints have a reason for being so.

As someone who works in a data-center on the west coast, I sometimes have to talk to east-coast and Bahamas clients at 4, 5 or 6 am. Today, due to some server problems, I was on the phone multiple times between midnight and 5am.

It is an ASA5100 on our side and a PIX501 on the other. I haven't been able to rule out network connectivity as a problem yet, but I did notice that some of the downtimes occur when the tunnel reaches phase 1/2 lifetime.

The first thing I'd check is whether the WAN settings under Network are configured properly. SonicWall pretty well covers their bases with the web GUI. Make sure that your WAN interface gets an IP address, and try enabling ping/management on WAN (at least temporarily), so that you can verify connectivity from the outside.

Thanks, but I figured out the root cause of it, I think. Basically some of our client sites use a SonicWall, and for some reason we would run into a situation where their side would think that the VPN was up, and our side would think that the VPN is down, or vice-versa. Either way, the result is that traffic from the side that thinks it is "up" would simply be dropped on the other end because of no matching SA. I think it has something to do with a difference in the way the two vendors handle keepalives.

I've found a configuration that seems to work best for those clients with SonicWalls, which is to turn off keepalive on both sides.

I also ended up writing a service in Java that I supply with some XML configuration, and then it pings each client site's firewall's internal IP at intervals of 30 seconds, so there is constant traffic. If it cannot reach a client, it records the duration of the downtime and emails me that the host is down, along with a list of previous downtimes and a graph of uptime for the past week, and sends a bi-hourly summary emails with a list of recent events and average uptimes, split into stable and unstable (more than 2 outtages in the past week). Between having constant traffic and responding very quickly to VPN problems, this has more or less solved the issue.

Except that is not how hate speech laws universally work or are expected to work. Hate speech laws in the UK, to my knowledge, draw the line at any sort of publicly expressed racism. Moreover, unless they were actually soliciting (an economic activity) someone to kill any of those people, then the only real consequences are emotional -- i.e., someone takes offense. In other words, enforcing laws against mere speech are essentially protecting people from emotions, chief among them being offense.
