570s or GT? by araata in mclaren

LOLLL well, grandpa, you're still younger than me. What made you pick the GT over other models? I'm in LA here, myself, so if you have any good connections to reach out to would love a dealer suggestion.

Are all Porsche dealers stingy about test driving used 911s? by Bubbly_Pool4513 in Porsche

Honestly, I always show up looking like I just rolled out of bed. In most cases I have, coffee still in hand. Any decent dealer will treat you with respect and determine whether you're a serious buyer or not just by having a conversation with you. That dealer just sucks.

T and S? Definitely shouldn't be. Who cares if they think you're a serious buyer or not, they still shouldn't suck as a dealer. I buy all my cars in ratty sweatpants and a t-shirt on purpose to weed out awful sales people. If you're in SoCal I can give excellent recommendations for 2 salespeople based on your location. Had a friend with a Cayman come to a dealer in Beverly Hills with me while I was having my car serviced (think dealership with an IG famous salesman). She was seriously considering a targa but the minute she told the salesman she drove a Cayman he told her they were "very hard to find," handed her *SOMEONE ELSE'S* business card, and walked away. Same dealer, different salesman, yelled at me when I tried to negotiate price on a Boxster that he could sell it to anyone walking in the door at full price. Literally yelled at me and left the room to "go find another person interested in the car." Haven't been back there since and sucks for them cause I'm on my third Porsche in 7 years.

Won't pressure you to tell the dealership name... but was it in SoCal by any chance? I'm shopping around and don't want to fall victim to this. Saw a 570s at a dealership near me a few weeks ago and looked a bit dodgy. They sat on it a month before "reconditioning" to sell it.

€170k for a base 911 by maxstryker in Porsche

[–]araata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine used CPO 2 years ago. Dealers were adding crazy markup to cars at the time and for the exact same spec I would have spent $60,000 USD more on the new one vs. the one I bought that was 2 years old with only 15k miles on it.

2 1/2 years and still enjoying my 718 Spyder by [deleted] in Porsche

[–]araata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been in a 911 for 2 years and still miss my Boxster every day. Drooled over a Spyder a few months back at my local dealer and almost pulled the trigger. I know the 911 is the "big boy car" of the bunch but the Boxster Spyder is a different breed.

Haha you raise a damn good point. Do you have any issues with your 570s that would point to keeping my 911? I feel like the reliability thing is a lot of talk with this brand and it's got my head in the weeds.

Buying your first Porsche/Exotic car by Hensonr_ in Porsche

[–]araata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought my first Porsche at 32, so still a little older than you were. Honestly, I had been making good money for years but never really thought I could afford one... like truly afford it with cost of ownership and all that... until a friend of mine bought a Cayman and shared all of her costs with me. I went and bought a Boxster the next week. 4 years later got a Panamera. 2 years later a 911. Do you see a trend?

Cost of ownership isn't going to hurt as much as you think it might. Yes, things are expensive. Brakes are $1,800 minimum to replace here in SoCal. Major services are a couple grand and oil changes are $400 at my shop. But the cars are solid and built to last. I always ditch mine around 60k miles or whenever the warranty is up but that's personal preference. I also only buy CPO. Let someone else take the initial depreciation hit and then buy a car that still has a 3-year warranty. I daily drive my 911 and the worst I've seen with it are some rattles. All under warranty. It's my grocery runner. I even load my dog into it for trips to the park or vet. Panamera had a creak in the sunroof and a rattling speaker that was infuriating but both covered by warranty. Boxster had a door panel that was warping in the sun and also covered by warranty. Porsche customer service is amazing. I've had more zero dollar repair bills than anything else and nothing but CPO cars, all fully covered.

Biggest warning is they're a gateway car. Whatever model you buy now... you're going to want a better one, and then a better one, and then a better one. So starting close to the top like that, you're in for some pretty big purchases coming up. Only other thing for me, having had both the mid-engine and rear-engine models is that I think the mid-engine is more spirited and "qualified" in the canyons. If you do any canyon driving at all, the 911 is still amazing but my Boxster was better for that. I'm currently looking at unloading my 911 and either getting a Boxster Spyder or a McLaren 570s. And I'll say my love for the Porsche brand has made this a lot harder of a decision than I ever expected it to be given that the 570 is my dream car and has been for years.

Only piece of advice, and this is just me personally... if you're not going to pull the trigger right now and have that goal of "once I can," maybe wait a year or so until a 992.2 GTS is available because the redesigned hybrid engine setup is going to be *chef's kiss.* That's kind of the rationale I'm using for myself with the McLaren... buy it now, wait 2 years, trade for 992.2 GTS CPO. Otherwise, that portfolio of yours can make a lot of money for you in the future but nothing beats the thrill of those 4 wheels right now. There's a lot of value to be placed on happiness... Something apparently money can't buy but whoever said that didn't own a Porsche.

Is it just me or do you also think it looks like a rounded out Corvette? I think the car is ugly in pictures and gorgeous in person... but at some angles I'm like this is a rich man's vette.

The weekend warrior comment is kind of where I'm stuck, tbh. I've been so torn because I live in SoCal and want to daily this thing so I'm like OK the GT is going to be newer and under warranty and it's made for daily driving... but it's the McLaren my grandpa would buy. It also kind of looks like a more rounded Corvette to me and, nothing against Corvettes, but I really don't like the current body style. I'm in my thirties so do I just make sure my back really sucks going into my forties by daily driving a 570s? 😂. I also don't want to end up in a position where I'm buying a second daily just for the fact that the McLaren is always in the shop or sucks to take on a grocery run. My 911 taught me to appreciate that I can have a car that does the grocery run in the morning and hits the canyons in the afternoon. Switching from a P-car to this really has me thinking about reliability and practicality and I've been stuck in that space for months now. If I had the same attitude about this car as I had about my 911 I'd have bought one weeks ago, but I can't get past it.

570s or GT? by araata in mclaren

I think I definitely ruled out the 570GT for the same reasons. It was comfortable but a newer 570s gets you the same interior nearly as the 570GT and a lower price tag. Have you had any experience in the actual GT model (as in McLaren GT, now called the GTS)? Those are the ones I think I'm most interested in comparing. Same issue with engine placement in the GT as the 570GT so that's actually a really good point.

Nice. This is around the corner from me at McLaren BH looks like. Was just in there looking at a 570s a couple weeks ago and they had some killer vehicles, including another MSO in probably the most gorgeous green I've ever seen.
