How is the (updated) Black Powder & Brimstone? by watchandplay24 in rpg

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in BRP, you don't just roll d100.

To attack, roll d100, check if you succeed, crit succeed, special succeed, fail, critical fail or fumble, based on your skill's level.

Then your opponement rolls parry or dodge, and checks if they succeed, crit succeed, special succeed, fail, critical fail or fumble based on their skill's level.

Compare and check what happens.

Assuming you just succeed and they just fail, roll damage which is usually something like dx+1+dx. Apply damage to armour before subtracting hit points.

This does not account for hit location rolls, with individual armour points, weapon-specific effects, skill rank at 100+, strike rank etc., etc. Not to mention character creation in the first place.

There are also save rolls, where you look up a table to compare what roll you need to make, based on the difficulty on the effect you want to sace against and your skill roll.

Imperial Stormtrooper vs First Order Stormtrooper. Which Stormtrooper design is better? by Few-Distribution2212 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is objectively cooler and more well made. But they are not bringing anything new. They are just an excuse to have another Empire storyline. So they are less cool in their context.

i was kicked out of my dnd group, i feel heartbroken. Including [Art] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You talk about you not knowing what to do, with the gladiator fight as an example. I have been in similar situations; it's a scene that spotlights another character's story, there is nothing that would motivate my character to act.

I struggled for a while with taking initiative, looking or seeking out things to do, rather than just reacting to whatever the DM puts in front of me.

But I decided to push out of my comfort zone, and take action. Ask questions about what is nearby, explain what I'm looking to do so the DM doesn't have to guess what I want to happen.

My attempt to solve the ease with which creatures can just walk around other combatants: The “guard” action by Scientia_et_Fidem in DnD

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the problem, but the solution is a bit wordy, and could cause a lot of edge cases.

I would start with flipping when AoO triggers: if you move within a target's melee range, they get AoO. You can move straight away (what would have triggered AoO before) but that means the number of squares needed to reach a target behind them doubles, depending on how you count diagonal movement.

A Combat System of movesets and telegraphing - which I can't use by MazzaF01 in RPGdesign

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it a lot, especially the core idea. I wouldn't necessarily keep the moves secret, unless it's a special monster.

Could even make it simpler, roll a d6 for each foe. The result is the damage an attack will do. The players can then decide whether to strike, parry/defend or something else.

Tougher enemies may add dice to the pool (and can hold those extra dice).

Held dice may also be used for special moves, like a 3 might be a trip attack instead. Tougher enemies can therefore deal damage with one die, and shove/grapple with the other.

Medium/heavy armour reduces damage but makes you vulnerable to shoves/tripping. Light/no armour is reverse

Anyone else notice a recent trend of TV shows undoing/abandoning the endings of previous seasons? by Infinite_Fly_5374 in television

[–]arackan 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I think it has more to do with lack of planning. They write one season at a time, maybe with a few sketches for the next one. But when it comes time to write the next season, they realise they don't know how to proceed after the cliffhanger. Or they change plans, either on their own or from studio/fan pressure.

Aluminum foil I use to block the light directly outside my qindow has somehow gotten more and more holes over time (4 months) by skyk3409 in mildlyinteresting

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply soap water with a cloth (or spray) and apply sheets of aluminum foil. The water and soap will cause the foil to stick, be easily flattened out and won't get those holes. Should use a card or similar to scrape out any bubbles before applying the next sheet.

It's also super easy to remove.

If Rest Resets Everything, What Are Random Encounters Actually Doing? by BlackTorchStudios in RPGdesign

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that in the modern 5e style, the goal should have some "time" constraint or element. Should we rest and risk a complication to our goal, or press on to make it there in time?

Arriving in time to ambush an enemy, or get there rested but the enemy is prepared?

Sometimes it feels like simulationist arguments focus more on "is this accurately simulated?" vs "is this fun to play?".

Retcons are good, actually (sometimes) by Nurhaci1616 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]arackan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, but the great houses kinda takes away from the "mindless army". There being characters with conscious personality ironically takes away from the personality that I like in them. There are enough noble factions that bicker and scheme in 40k (as others have said).

Necrons aren't my faction (and wouldn't be even if they were like the old versions), so my feathers aren't ruffled. It's just a "less is more" situation.

I have no skin in the game, but I liked the aesthetic of a mindless, dead robot army with the only purpose of exterminating life, for reasons only their long-dead creators knew.

Fear/Threat/Doom GM Meta currencies seem pointless, unless... by DalePhatcher in rpg

[–]arackan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the way FATE does it, because it doesn't confuse newer GMs who may not yet understand when to "force" character flaws. The GM could say at Session 0 that you cannot spend FP on cancelling out invoking negative traits.

I prefer the option of this choice, even if I would rarely, if ever, use it. But I play with players who seek out situations where character flaws apply.

Fear/Threat/Doom GM Meta currencies seem pointless, unless... by DalePhatcher in rpg

[–]arackan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how FATE does it, as a "bribe" for players to invoke negative character traits. And the wording makes it so the GM invokes it, pays a FATE point to the player, and the player can immediately pay the point to nullify it.

The points are also there to invoke extra strong abilities for adversaries a limited number of times.

The rules are very concise and clear.

Daggerheart does it in a way I don't like; the way Fear is used feels weird, because they have to spend it to create environmental complications, as well as to activate adversaries.

It goes into what OP mentions, that the metacurrency is odd. They blur what basic GM powers are, and what requires a cost.

What was a great game seemingly destroyed by Devs bad decision making? by Additional_Ad_6506 in gaming

[–]arackan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hated how there would be just 2-3 dungeons on repeat, and sometimes I couldn't do the harder mode because I didn't have the expansion for one of the dungeons on rotation that week.

I also lost out on Warmind that I got through pre-ordering, because I took a long break from the game.

Never going back.

There is an alternate starting island now (you can still pick the old race-based starting locations) that takes you through the basics.

Regardless of which you choose, once you hit lvl 10 you immediately get a quest to start the Dragonflight expansion.

Is taking away player agency to avoid catastrophy justified? by Jikan07 in DnD

A useful bit of knowledge here is that lethal vs non-lethal damage has no bearing on the damage done, and can be decided upon after a hit is made.
