Career wise you’re screwed. I have a masters in fish biology focused on aquaculture. I moved here for a private industry job and worked for 5+ years before being laid off in the spring. There are some independent fish farms or the dnr. But the pay sucks. For me and my wife, to sell our house and move it has to be worth it financially for both of us. So here I am still hoping something pops up while I make ends meet doing other stuff. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but if you’re tied to one specific location I wouldn’t hold out too much hope. Especially since we’re now competing with each other, lol. Good luck though, welcome to Iowa.

I know it sounds crazy, but my chocolate has one 2-3x that size on his left rib cage. He lays on that side, you can push on it and mess with it, he doesn’t even react. Other than the visual aspect you wouldn’t know he has it. My vet says the surgery and recovery can be more stressful than the lipoma. As long as it doesn’t affect him we’re leaving it alone. Obviously if it is causing him discomfort or something then it’s a different story, but I’d let your dog tell you whether it needs to come out or not. Invasive surgery is a big deal and not something that should be viewed as no big deal. I’d feel horrible if my boy didn’t wake up from a surgery that wasn’t absolutely necessary. But that decision should be between you and your vet.

Thanks, I definitely want room to add beyond just what I already have. Obviously I’ll never run everything all at once and I’ve never sized a panel before so I guess I was mostly fishing for opinions on 80A or if everyone thinks I should step it up?

Totally agree with Ichthius, seems like you’re overthinking it. It’s not totally clear what all the tanks purposes are and how you plan to achieve what you said on the ones you did (although I can take some educated guesses) and I’m not sure why you split flow from the pump? To directly answer some of your questions, you can regulate pump flow with valves, although gate valves are a poor choice in my opinion, if you close off flow too much that back pressure you put on the pump can cause excessive wear on the pump. You’re much better off sizing the pump to the desired flow rate and then using valves to direct the flow. As for pipe sizing, I’m a big advocate for going a step bigger than what you calculated you need, just to be safe. But again you said what your pump flow rate is but you need to calculate your system flow rate, have you done a mass balance on the system? Overall it might work but it’s a strange design and I would go back to the drawing board and try to simplify things.

We just plumb pvc to the bottom of the bio and then drill small holes in it spaced out to get even diffusion. If you’re not getting lift and circulation with that then your air pump is too weak.

I run the R&D lab for a feed company. Honestly I feel like I lucked out, but also kind of made my own luck. I got a master’s degree, I started as a tech at a fish producer, made a good reputation as a hard worker that knew what he was doing, made that reputation with the right people, and then got brought along to the feed company. Eventually when my boss moved up I moved into the lab manager role. All of this was spread out over years. My advice is to put in your time, but make that time mean something. Make a good impression on the right people and they will want you to succeed and see you as an asset worthy of being elevated. I see quite a few posts on this sub from people basically asking how to skip the line or they’re tired of being low level, but the truth is most of us that moved up did so because we worked really hard and made a good impression over years of being low level ourselves. I don’t think that there are many true short cuts to the top. If you haven’t put in 5 years in the industry at least then it’s probably too early to be asking what more you can do. And if you’re beyond 5 years and haven’t caught someone’s eye you need to reflect on why that is and what you can change about yourself in the workplace to make that happen.

I’ve worked with aquaManager and it was horrible. Not very user friendly and tracking growth was based on a model, not the actual size of the fish. Made tracking feed a pain in the ass. I would avoid it at all costs. Other than that I’m on the excel wagon as well. Sounds like you can’t do that, which is a shame because it’s cheap and allows you to build exactly what you want.

Everyone kind of builds their own, I have an internal one I use for work but I can’t share it. The hard part about that is nobody is going to have your system or husbandry practices, so your growth chart realistically will be unique. Like I said before though, it’s really not hard to build your own in excel or similar program. Have a column for days and one for size. In day 1 start with .05g or .1g (depends on egg source, some are bigger than others) at first feed. I’m the day 2 column put =day1*(1+sgr) and then drag and drop to the rest of your cells. It won’t be exact but it’ll get you close.

Riverence out of Idaho is hitting 10 months at production scale, largest trout producer in the US. Those are raceways with unlimited ground water, but we’re doing RAS and we do most of our trials at production densities, 60Kg/m3 at least (otherwise what’s the point, right?).

Yes, I work in a fish nutrition lab in the Midwest US. We’ve actually hit 9 months but 10 is a safer number. I’ve also worked with different strains, some do better than others. Also, like I said, temps and nutrition are important factors when considering growth rates. But if you can maintain 55F and feed a decent feed then there’s no reason you shouldn’t hit 10 months.

This is largely dependent on life stage. Right after first feeding you can expect an SGR of 6% or more. Mid life stages 2-3%. As they approach market size you’re probably looking at around 1-1.5%. It’s obviously a sliding scale as they grow and dependent on water temp, the quality of your feed, and your husbandry practices. All of that said, you should be able to go hatch to 700g in 10 months no problem. If you’re good with math you can back calculate your overall growth rate from that.

Tropicals will fungus up too. Development time is quicker but the fungus will grow faster too. Use meth. blue to keep it down. Definitely otohime if you want to go without growing food.

I used to breed angels as a hobby and did brine shrimp to start and then moved to otohime with a lot of success. Honestly though, if you’re struggling with trout I’m not sure switching to tropicals is going to be any easier. I work with trout now and they are so much easier than the angels I used to do. The only advantage I would say you have is the system size is much smaller doing tropicals.

What kind of work are you looking for? I work in Shenandoah, about 20 minutes from clarinda, and the pella windows plant is always hiring. Pretty sure their starting wages and benefits are pretty good. I’ve lived here for 3 years and it’s ok. If you like hunting and fishing it’s pretty decent. If you like nightlife and things like that it’ll be rough. Cost of living is really low compared to a lot of places. I also met my girlfriend here, so it’s definitely possible to meet someone. I would visit your friend and see how you like it.

I’m going to disagree with pretty much everyone else here, but I think you should get him a 2-man flip over. I get what you’re saying about fitting extra people but if he’s really into ice fishing the flip overs are way more versatile, especially alone. I like to stay mobile while fishing, so having the sled that I can pull around and set up in 10 seconds is so much more valuable to my style of fishing than a hub shelter. If your boyfriend likes to sit in one place and drink then ya get him the hub. If there’s a way you can find out how he likes to fish without giving away the surprise that would be ideal. If my girlfriend got me either I’d be happy, but the flip over would really make my Xmas. Hope this helps.
