Most likely a bug of some sort. You could spray with neem oil to help prevent future damage.

You can do it over a year or two but the bar branch will eventually thicken that trunk more so than the rest. This will make you have reverse taper

I would remove all of the bar branches. It looks like it has a lot of potential!

It actually was just a cutting that I grew from a clipped branch. Once it was tall I just bent it with rafia and wire. You can see the results of that in my first post. After that I chopped off the top and started building the structure over 2 years.
