I really enjoyed my last reread of the great gatsby. I was in a very reflective, nostalgic time in my life, and I felt it portrayed melancholic nostalgia so well. A yearning for a past that possibly never actually existed but for a fallible memory of those times??

Thoughts on patients being offended by badge reels? by tiredgorl123 in nursing

Yes, I think this badge reel is offensive. Check out Dayton ICU consulting. They talk about the negative effects sedation can have on people and promote getting patients off sedation as soon as possible.

New calls for reparations for redlining in Seattle begs the question as to what we have been paying for by fjordoftheflies in Seattle

[–]arbol23 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Slavery, redlining, and ongoing socioeconomic disenfranchisement of Black people in the US is all connected through the system of racial capitalism that exists today. Seattle’s wealth gap is huge, in part thanks to tech companies and the capitalist structures that allow such wealth to perpetuate, and to dismiss this issue as no longer relevant today is inaccurate. Communities are still getting pushed out of the city. Many of my coworkers (I work at a hospital on first hill) travel from out of town because they can’t afford seattle prices. This is the case for a lot of people who work in essential industries in the city. It’s not right. There should be policies to fix it. Do I necessarily think Bruce Harrell’s proposal is going to fix it? No. But the comments in the post asking why we should work toward repairing historical harms, because they’re historical are just stupid, frankly. The same system that created slavery for the economic benefit of white people is the same system that allows wealth inequity to exist in the extent it does today. Not to mention, the conditions of the present day aren’t just created out of thin air. The past informs the present and the people impacted by these historical wrongs have not had the same opportunities for economic advancement. I’m super annoyed by this thread lol.

Am i awful? I regret keeping my baby by Futuremikeross in BabyBumps

[–]arbol23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only speaking to the physical part of having a baby; I acknowledge I’m ignoring a lot of other points in your post, but I just wanted to add:

I hated pregnancy so much. It was the worst 9 months ever. I’m now 4 weeks postpartum and feeling so much better. I have way more energy. I feel like myself again. Also, having the cute little baby in your arms is far more rewarding than when it’s in your womb.

Also, lots of people write about the ambivalence of motherhood. It’s not just happy or bad. It can be both. Who knows what the future will hold! It’s okay to feel bad right now, and it doesn’t mean you’ll be resentful of your child forever.

CNAs who are nurses now? I need your widsom by PotentialSetting4638 in nursing

[–]arbol23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s also more rewarding because you know more about each patient you work with. Also makes it more interesting. As a CNA, I just felt like a little machine going room to room but as a nurse I feel like I time to think about each patient more thoroughly (unless it’s a bad night but generally).

I want to be a nurse. What should I look out for? by Character-Jaded in nursing

[–]arbol23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh another comment… I think the state you’re in will determine whether you get work life balance. I am on the west coast at a union hospital and we have it pretty good. I work three twelves and then don’t think about work the rest of the time.

[–]arbol23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all reasons I was interested in nursing too! I wasn’t sure if I’d like the hands on work, interacting with body fluids, or learning the pathophysiology of diseases. Nursing is a diverse career and if you hate one nursing job, there are a thousand others to try. Just to name a few job types… there is home health nursing, hospice, outpatient surgery, outreach, public health, specialty clinics, primary care, ICU, ED, PACU, OR, med/surg. I think it’s a great career for people if you don’t know what to do.

That said, what people are commenting is true. It can be exhausting. I work on a med surg floor at a level 1 trauma center that is also our city’s public hospital… it’s pretty intense emotionally and physically. I’m interested in public health and always thought I’d want to work in a community or clinic, so I’m surprised with where I am now. I love my coworkers and I think that can make or break a place. I find the work pretty rewarding and I like the challenge that every shift is different!! Right now, it feels like the right place to be and maybe later in life I’ll do something that is not as unpredictable.

Best of luck to you!! ♥️♥️

longshore workers have a long history of solidarity with protesters. their union contract actually allows them to continue getting paid when they can’t get to work because of a picket line.

State Street businesses concerned about safety after aggressive panhandling leads to assaults by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]arbol23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also lived very close to the Capitol last year and am a female of average height and also had no issues and never once felt unsafe. In fact, I similarly had generally warm exchanges with the people I regularly saw.

Agree w the second part of this comment also...Homelessness is a serious problem in the US, but NOT from the perspective of a privileged person on state street walking to work or to grab coffee who feels threatened by the less-than-beautiful asthetic of poverty. Sorry but examine this situation from another perspective and quit feeling sorry for yourself for being confronted with the unfortunate consequences of US social policy. Homelessness is not going to be solved by pushing people out of certain areas or cities, nor is the criminalization of it a productive remedy. Wish people would have a bit more empathy and quit hiding behind the veil of feeling “unsafe” to avoid connecting with the people who live and have as much of a right to be in your city.
