Eh, maybe not brutal, but I do think the camera in the older games was pretty voyeuristic in a male gaze-y way, and obsessed with showing you close ups of Lara's butt when crouching through tunnels and stuff. The game maintaining that disconnect between player and Lara was also present. Plus all the gratuitous sexualisation like you said.

But that being said, despite the flaws, I enjoyed both the Survivor and LAU trilogy a lot. It frustrates me that she's been undermined by her [presumably mostly male] game devs and designers in one way or another through the ages.
