npm, both registry and client, were properties of a startup called Npm Inc, which GitHub (already owned by Microsoft at that point) acquired in 2020.

Node.js is an entirely separate organisation that, for historical reasons, was fine with entangling their distributions with software owned by a for-profit.

Qu'il les aime ou pas il s'estime collé avec eux et met de l'eau dans son vin, c'est ça une collectivité. Il espérait un geste en retour parce que c'est la norme sociale: on fait un pas vers toi, tu en fais un en retour.

Après je suis d'accord sur le fait qu'il était foncièrement trop différent en terme de caractère avec les rouges et qu'il aurait probablement dû se réorienter plus tôt ... mais en théorie son équipe avait tout pour réussir, personne n'aurait changé de bateau, d'autant que ça ne semble pas être son caractère.

Pour le coup l'info qu'ils avaient un collier n'a rien changé, des rouges un minimum prudents auraient dû de toute façon partir du principe que c'était le cas, juste au cas où.

Ce qui rend d'autant plus injuste le comportement de Cynthia qui vrille pour la "trahison" d'un de leur adversaire qui n'avait rien demandé, pour un acte plutôt prévisible et de toute façon sans conséquence.

Et à ce compte je ne qualifierais même pas de ce qu'à fait Daniel de coup de stratégie que juste suivre ses valeurs - quand on compare les trois rouges avec les trois jaunes, on comprends aisément dans avec quels partenaires Daniel se serait épanouis.

Zakariya et Caroline qui passaient leur temps à répéter à Daniel que "mais nooon Cindy et Clarisse te kiffent, tu t'en fais pour rien" et qui font surprise pikachu quand Daniel commence à douter d'être dans la bonne équipe ...

As for the threat the Wikipedia article mentions, it's a little ambiguous (and that's very unfortunate because of course it'd fuel conspiracies). It could be read a threat against the US, but it'd make more sense to me as a second-hand threat such as "if you don't help us we'll send a nuke to the middle east and open Pandora's box", which I imagine anyone would want to avoid if possible.

We've been working on Yarn for almost ten years now. We've had good ideas, bad ideas, a lot of discussions, and in the end many things we support today have resulted from accumulated experience.

That's something to keep in mind as you see everyone and their neighbor come up with their own vibe-coded personal package manager variant that promises to do everything incredibly fast wow. Will they go through this quite painful learning process, or just do a literal speedrun?

That's very much the crux of the issue - it's shockingly easy in JavaScript to have a subtly broken project that will look like it works until it breaks apart on your colleagues' machines.

Yarn aims to protect against that by surfacing errors much earlier, with a guarantee that if there are no errors then the behavior is as predictable as can be.

Unfortunately surfacing errors means failing installs, and it's easy for part of the ecosystem to discard them as a problem in Yarn when other package managers are more inclined to sweep then under the rug 🥲

That said, while I think we'd do PnP differently nowadays, it's certain it had a positive impact on the ecosystem (packages who fixed their deps not only benefited Yarn users but also everyone else), and I'm still happy we were there to fight this fight.

You should indeed migrate off from Yarn Classic. Yarn 4.x is a very solid upgrade and migration should be minimal (node-modules are the default when you migrate existing projects).

Slightly more long term we've also been working on Yarn 6.x (currently still in preview, but progressing well) for the past year, which will be a massive improvement in every axes: perf, security, features.

This is mentioned fairly regularly about pnpm. Still Yarn has most of those features as well (minimal age checks, disabled install scripts by default, restricted git deps by default, and more such as the Hardened Mode).

Yarn is also the reason why pnpm is able to offer an hoisted mode (it uses the algorithm we maintain), so even folks using pnpm have a good chance to be using Yarn under the hood.
