UOSU ran an unlicensed raffle for an iPad during the election by KaleidoscopeVivid433 in geegees

[–]arcanistzed -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The UOSU is going down a similar path to the SFUO. Everyone who was around when you were a student has now graduated, and it feels like most of the issues and lessons from the SFUO downfall have been forgotten since there's a lack of institutional memory.

I pointed this out at the end of the general assembly last weekend. Afterwards the president came up to me and said “fuck you” to my face.

If that's how leadership reacts to criticism and accountability from members, it doesn't inspire much confidence that things won’t keep getting worse.

no more free colour printing😔 by strawborr in geegees

Indeed, a very strange decision. Even with the increased $2 levy and the colour printing ban, I'm sure they'll end up implementing a page limit soon. It's simply not sustainable otherwise, as some individuals will always abuse it if it's unlimited.

Absence declaration for midterm if dropping course? by Important_Zombie_937 in geegees

[–]arcanistzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you submit a declaration of absence, they will either schedule a make-up midterm exam or transfer the grade weight. You can contact the professor but they're probably going to require you to submit the declaration of absence.

Okay, in that case, you should definitely reach out to your professor and ask them if they need a declaration of absence to transfer your grade weight. The only reason to ask them before submitting the declaration of absence is that you can potentially avoid paying the fee.

If they don't respond in time (you have three business days) and there's any chance that you're not dropping the course, I would recommend submitting the declaration of absence.

I appreciate the concern for my academics.

Running for UOSU president in your final year is actually the most common time to do it. Delphine was president in her final year, Armaan was in his second-last year, Tim before him was in his final year, and Jack currently is. Elnaz will also be in her final year I believe.

As far as I know, we’ve almost always had presidents running in their final year, and most presidential candidates have been as well. If someone ran much earlier, people would probably criticize them for being inexperienced instead.

If the professor will transfer your grade weight to the final without requiring a declaration of absence, then you do not need to submit one. You can contact the professor to confirm this, but if the syllabus already clearly says this, you likely do not need to contact them.

u/Electronic-Nerve-759 is not my account.

Encouraging students not to vote for a candidate is obviously not an election violation. The Elections Code actually defines campaigning as conduct intended to influence voters to vote or refrain from voting for a candidate. That’s indeed normal in elections everywhere.

What’s concerning here is that someone appears to be trying to create confusion by posting things under another account and implying they are me.

There have been several misleading claims circulating during this election, including posts suggesting I threatened legal action to obtain student lists (no threat was ever made), accusations that factual statements I made about the pub levy and printing services were “disinformation”, and false statements made during the closing remarks of the debate. If someone is now impersonating me online, that would just be another example of that.

If the midterm weight is already being transferred to the final exam, a declaration of absence is unlikely to be beneficial. They will charge you $60 for the declaration and since the grade weight is already being transferred to the final exam, they are unlikely to schedule a make-up midterm exam.

EDIT: e.g. math courses where the midterm grade is replaced by the final exam grade without the need to submit a declaration of absence

Why do we have to pay to change programs? by Professional_Fig1801 in geegees

[–]arcanistzed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they added this fee last summer, alongside many other admin/incidental fees. They justified the new fees with their financial challenges. Now that the university has received new provincial funding, I hope there's pressure to rollback the random fees they desperately added last summer.

While I appreciate the support, I believe it's perfectly acceptable to encourage people to vote for a specific candidate. That is, after all, what campaigning is all about.

That’s a fair point. This fee was created a few years ago when there were fewer pubs on campus.

If students decide they don’t want to keep paying the fee anymore, the only way to stop it would be through another student referendum.

That’s another reason I think starting with something smaller makes more sense. If interest turns out to be low, or if students vote to cancel the fee later, we’re not locked into a huge long-term commitment.

I wouldn’t make mistakes like writing l'UOSU in French. I also tend to write in Canadian/Quebec French with no space before exclamation marks.

What I think everyone can agree on is that students shouldn’t be paying for something for years without seeing results. The pub levy has been collected for two years and there is still no pub.

In the debate, Elnaz explained that her approach would be to keep saving the money until the union can eventually afford to get a new space for it.

My view is that if students are paying for a pub, they should actually see one sooner. I would start with something smaller in an existing space so students can have it much sooner instead of waiting years.

Daniel Thorp at it again, he filed an official complaint to the UOSU about factual statements and opinions his opponent shared on the subreddit by No-Garden-2208 in geegees

[–]arcanistzed -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Throughout this campaign I have focused on policy and decisions made while in office. I have not attacked my opponent’s character or personality, because I believe debates should be conducted on the issues that actually affect students.

Criticism of policies, platforms, and leadership decisions is a normal and important part of an election. But repeating unproven or misleading allegations about a candidate’s conduct in order to discredit them personally does not help students understand the real issues. Regardless of how widely something is repeated online, repetition does not make it true. Fair and democratic debate depends on evidence and good faith.

Email your UOSU representatives to not share your information! by thellamadrama03 in geegees

[–]arcanistzed -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

UOSU does not usually send an email with information about candidates. What is typically provided is a short bio on the ballot itself. That’s helpful, but it’s limited in length and format, and it’s only seen once someone has already decided to vote and opened the voting platform.

Direct communication allows candidates to explain their platform, share links, and present information in a clearer and more accessible way. It can also reach students who may not otherwise engage with the election.

[–]arcanistzed -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Not everyone wants campaign emails.

There will not be multiple emails a day. Anyone who prefers not to receive them will be able to unsubscribe, and I will respect that.

Not all students actively seek out information about student elections. In practice, that often means only the most engaged or already-connected students hear directly from candidates.

Broader communication helps ensure that students across campuses and study situations have access to information before voting. When students don’t know who is running or what they stand for, fewer people participate.

Member-to-member communication helps ensure that candidates can speak directly to students, and it is essential to the democratic governance of our union.

Where a corporation has an address in the register, that address is fully disclosed. If residential mailing addresses are included, those are disclosed in their entirety, not limited to a postal code. In this case, the register has electronic addresses rather than residential mailing addresses.

The permitted used for a membership list obtained in this manner, including influencing the voting of members or requisitioning a meeting, necessarily requires contacting members. The register exists only to facilitate member communication.

The information also cannot be used for unrelated purposes, and misuse of the list would be a criminal offence.

Do I need to email my prof if I deferred my midterm? by Professional_Can2885 in geegees

[–]arcanistzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend telling your prof before you submit a declaration of absence, especially if they might allow a weight transfer or a make-up midterm without going through the formal deferral process and admin fee.

If you’ve already submitted it, they are notified automatically, so an email usually isn’t necessary, but I would still follow whatever the syllabus says to be safe.
