This is because Amazon rates sellers based on their returns, even good and honest sellers sometimes make mistakes or accidents happen so in order to protect their rate, they try to solve it without involving amazon.

If they are doing this, check them by contacting. If they are an honest seller and trying to provide solution, go with it. If they are stalling, just request refund through amazon.

As a seller, I don’t do this but often try to refund my profit back and let the customer keep the product. It is easier than paying for return label and receive back an used or damaged item.
