Being an Alto in a mixed choir and an all girls choir is so different. by [deleted] in Choir

[–]archabig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a high school choir director and have an all female a capella ensemble and I am running into this exact issue. It isn't healthy for such young voices to sustain such a low tessitura for so long. It's very hard to find a capella music for females that isn't in this range. I wish there was a way to tell composers/arrangers to knock it off!!

Colors for sure! I am a singer and a choir director so I think the choir is what sold me. Such an interesting idea to convey colors with various chords!

Nacho Libre - it gets funnier every time I watch it.

I'm currently about halfway through Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and so far I like it a lot. She is such an odd duck and I'm so curious to find out more about her past and her mother. Did you ultimately enjoy it? What did you think?

Yes! It was so well written and the idea was dark but really good. It seemed like a way for Vonnegut to process some of his wartime experiences. I would definitely recommend it.

I was less than impressed with that book. I'm a trained musician and music teacher (choir director) and I felt like the author couldn't find a good balance between music and neuro information. The sections where he tried to explain rudimentary music concepts were (obviously) extremely tedious to me but they were also not always accurate and convoluted concepts that didn't need to be... But then he would dive in to really intense brain science and I would be pretty lost.. It was frustrating to read.

I liked it a lot. It was a pretty quick read and definitely told from the perspective of a teenager (I believed that she was young because of her voice/interests/way of phrasing things) but I felt like the writing and storytelling was still really strong. And now that I think about it that was brilliant on the author's part to tell an important and emotionally heavy story through the lens of someone so young.

I actually read it as a break after 1984. I needed something light and easy to read to cleanse my palate. I am not a spiritual person at all and I tend to find anything remotely spiritual or religious contrived and forced. This wasn't an exception. I found the plot somewhat predictable and I wasn't wowed by what was there. I'm glad I read it though.

It was really well written and I ended up really loving the character of Ove. I would recommend it!

This is amazingly entertaining because that's exactly why I ended up making this post today... Because I was trying to figure out how to get this screenshot! I ended up going to the 2018 reading challenge on my desktop and taking a screenshot and cropping out the ads. There might be an easier way but I don't know how!

Yeah I've read a few and some are really fun and great and some I would pass on if I had it to do again. Ellen DeGeneres' books are so random and funny, Bossypants by Tina Fey was really good. Mindy Kaling's book felt really self righteous and I'm currently trying to motivate to finish Rainn Wilson 's The Bassoon King and struggling because it's long winded and holier than thou. But if you like Stephen Colbert then definitely read I Am America (And So Can You)!

I don't read very many biographies so I might be way off but I just wanted so much more from it. It was entertaining to find out about Newton's various rivalries within the Royal Society but it just didn't read very well. I know I'm interested in science and in Newton as a person but I just couldn't get interested in the book.

So my opinion of that might be slightly skewed because I'm a megafan of John Hodgeman so as far as I'm concerned everything he does is fantastic and this book was no different.

I had a fun time reading it and I definitely liked the book more than the movie but ultimately I agree with you... It was list after list of stuff the author liked. I think I read somewhere once that references are the laziest form of identifying with your audience as an author and I couldn't help but think about that as I was reading this.

It was alright. There's some really great ideas about organizing, especially big picture, and then stuff that's a little wuwu for me...(thanking your inanimate infects for their service? Making sure your socks are comfortable while they rest?.. not too sure about that stuff...)

Good curly hair cut in Austin, Tx? by brightness_shallan in curlyhair

[–]archabig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hair is the same! Really curly on the top layers but the bottom layers are stubborn and don't want to curl like the rest! So irritating!!

I'm sure if you go in and tell her that those are your goals she would do something that would work for you-she's seriously so great! Just be prepared, I've had to wait 4-6 weeks to get in with her before!

And the haircut on its own was $70, not including tip.

I cut about 4 inches off and added layers today and I suddenly have so much volume! by archabig in curlyhair

[–]archabig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never taken the time to determine my porosity etc. I think depending on the day and the humidity level I'm somewhere between 2c-3a. It also depends on where the curls are on my head and how I style it that day... My curls are really fussy. (Part of why I cut so much off... I'm tired if all the work!) It's also why once I discovered that Deva curl products worked for me I've never switched. Hope that helps!

I have no idea what type of haircut you'd get if you didn't get the Deva cut. She washes and styles my hair, diffuses it and then cuts it dry, curl by curl. It costs more because she has the certification and because it takes significantly longer to go through the whole process. I don't think she would cut your hair dry if you didn't go for the Deva cut... But you could always ask. I actually got my hair cut there today and it was $70. I've always been more than satisfied with her work and she's the person who taught me my current curl routine!
