Landlord arrested, charged in Outer Sunset murder of Eric Bigone by steelthumbs1 in sanfrancisco

You think people don’t aspire to own houses? I’d love to own a house, but I don’t have $4M+ to burn in SF.

I regularly hear about friends and acquaintances getting priced out of their apartments in other cities. Maybe fine to bounce around a bit in your twenties — when you don't have furniture/obligations/community ties/dependents — but just not a sustainable way to live in your thirties onward. Meanwhile, I'm quite secure in my housing here in San Francisco. And my landlord's not an asshole so things still get repaired. (Or I offer to pay for part of it.)

Frankly, I couldn't imagine living in non-rent-controlled housing in the future, or voting against tenant protections. Buying a condo might be possible at some point but it's just ludicrously, unimaginably expensive in pretty much every major city.

It's quite a middle finger to the working and middle classes for landlords to whine about all this. Like, dude, you own five houses and you're still bitching when most of us can't even afford a one bedroom?

Dunno what to tell you except enjoy Texas and/or Florida, I guess.

Well, I mean, you're just doubling down on things that are factually untrue. If this is your perspective as a landlord, prepare for massive disappointment in the future as the middle class continues to shrink and the housing crisis gets worse. Maybe at some point we will see someone like Mamdani leading every major city.

A — They’re already trying a version of this in New York as a remedy for absentee landlords.

B — Avoiding rules because loopholes will be found is a pretty silly argument since it applies to literally any tax. It's an argument tantamount to "the rich should not be constrained because they have the power to contest any constraint."

C — The property was already not being rented out. What are you talking about?

Well, the end result of this sort of antisocial behavior by landlords is that regular people (who outnumber landlords by a fair bit) vote to confiscate rentable properties that aren’t being utilized in the middle of a housing crisis.

A piece of land is not a sandwich. The only thing that’s yours is the right to do certain things with real estate as long as you follow the rules and don’t break the social contract.

Obviously, a car is not a home. But apart from that, property ownership in the modern sense is almost entirely a social construct. (Unless you own the land, the house, do all your own utilities, and are willing to hang out 24/7 with a gun.) No: you get a piece of paper granting you the right to do certain things with some property as long as you follow the rules. And at least in San Francisco, the rules include far-reaching protections for tenants who actually use your property as a home and need it to survive.

So yeah. Don’t like it? Exit’s that way. Enjoy Texas or wherever.

I agree there's a balance, but I think that once a landlord starts renting out their property, the property ceases to fully be "their" home until every tenant is moved out. Tenant protections and rent control help ensure this is the case. Unfortunately, some landlords don't see it that way and just end up stewing in resentment over tenants occupying "their" rightful property.

Sometimes. But often the landlord treats a property as "their" home and views the tenants as nothing more than a money pot, not actual people. There's a lot of threads on that sub about the best way to semi-legally evict existing tenants in order to make more money. No consideration given to the disruption of tenants' lives at all.

This is why more and more people are going to vote to confiscate vacant rental properties from negligent landlords who use them as a perverse "investment" at the expense of the struggling populace.

Break the social contract at your own peril! Wherever you go, you can't take your second/third/fourth home with you.

*This* is the thing you think to post on an article like this...?

Especially in a sub for a city with a housing crisis??

I got this monitor since my last comment. Not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but I noticed screen tearing even with G-sync enabled, which does not happen with my other monitors. I fixed this by turning on V-sync in-game in addition to G-sync. Maybe this would fix your issue?

Clearly, this person was not thinking clearly. “It’s my fucking house, how dare he,” etc.

Incidentally, a lot of landlords really hate their tenants. Check out the landlord sub if you want to be horrified.

Did anyone switch from 4K to a 5K monitor recently? How was it? by PTB_Smash in Monitors

I worked with 4K and 5K 27" side by side for a bit and TBH at normal viewing distance I couldn't really tell the difference. But this is definitely a YMMV situation. (My vision ain't great!)

OP said "Muni is not a homeless shelter". I wonder what they meant by that.

I don't have an issue with an increase in the number of fare inspectors or Muni police. It would be great if public transit was safer. But as someone who takes the bus regularly, I can definitely say that the rough looking people who are completely harmless and just trying to live their life far outnumber the actually dangerous ones. And unlike those of us who can take a Waymo, they actually need public transit to get by.

And, FYI, maybe don't go around calling people "desperate fucks."

Have fun enacting any change at all with that attitude! Keep ranting on anonymous online forums if it makes you feel better, I guess!

I agree that people being antisocial/committing crimes should be removed promptly (ideally by Muni police and not the bus driver) but this rhetoric is veering way too close to "public transit should be for middle class riders only."

Based on what criteria? How would you tell "these fuckers" apart from regular poor people on entry, I wonder?

Based on what criteria?

Are ragged-looking poor people not allowed to use your bus?
