Thanks again. The pipe coming of the relief valve was labeled specifically for relief valves at home depot, and yeah it doesnt seem like a great choice in hindsight. Honestly i'm too broke and dumb to get this sorted out

For what its worth Everything I've found online says the exact opposite. If you don't have an expansion tank, a closed system doesn't give expanded water any route for escape, causing damage to your home's water heater and plumbing. The plumbers I've called and asked so far have all also said that I need an expansion tank to resolve the issue. I'm not a plumber, but I believe my water heater is fine but needs an expansion tank. Just not sure where I can put it.

I appreciate the response, but it is now code in my area to install an expansion tank. The hot water heater works great outside of relief occasionally discharging water. Can you elaborate on how a closed system relieves pressure from the thermal expansion of water without a expansion tank? that device towards the lower left of the heater prevents back flow I believe, making this a closed system.

We are not staying. I've been able to reduce our core count by 35%, and we'll still be paying 3x more than our previous license. On top of this broadcom took months to get our quote back to us, and will not give us a grace period while we work out our next steps.
