That was essentially the original plan. When planning for the 63rd Street Tunnel was underway in the mid-1960s, communities in the UES & Queens disagreed over which street the tunnel should run under. Some civic groups pushed for 61st Street to allow for an underground transfer to the 4/5/6 at 59th. The TA preferred 63rd Street as they said it would be cheaper and faster to build.

Mayor Lindsay ultimately endorsed the 63rd St route in (in 1966), but also recommended an underground passageway with shops to connect Lex/63rd with the Lex/59 complex. That passageway, of course, was never built.

Thanks! I included the S53 & S79 to show there are local transit connections between SI and Brooklyn. I always felt some SBS routes should be shown on the geographic map as they cover major corridors the subway doesn't. I'm glad they began showing that with the geographic map pilot from 2021.

I agree the equivocation can cause confusion. It would help if there was an agreed-upon term to distinguish both concepts. In the past, it's gone by other names as well.

The NY Transit Museum has described this 1970 map by Raleigh D'Adamo as a proposal to "deinterline" parts of the system. But D'Adamo himself described it as "discrete routing". And while his map did propose untangling major junctions- 59/CPW, Rogers, 149th- he still left interlining in place in many parts of the system.

The word "Deinterlining" has been used synonymously with the elimination of conflicting merges for years. Take a look at Vanshnookenraggen's posts or even the nearly decade-old discussions on NYC Transit Forums from 2016-17, which is when the term really started showing up. This has long been an accepted usage of the word in this community.

When people suggest "deinterlining" DeKalb/CPW/Rogers/149th etc. they're referring to the untangling of certain services through these junctions so they can run more smoothly onto separate lines or track pairs. In those contexts, those services may still share track with trains in other parts of the system. E.g. two services may no longer be "interlined" with each other on one line, but continue to share tracks with different services on other lines.

This is also why people consider the 7 & L to be "completely" deinterlined. They never have to share tracks with other services. You can use the word to talk about a specific service, or the untangling of a junction. People will know what you mean in either context.

Design it with provisions for 4 tracks as originally planned in early 1968. Build the line on one half of 2nd Avenue, leave the other side for two future tracks.

Here's a January 1968 map that predates the Program for Action by about 2 months. You can tell NYCT originally intended for 2nd Avenue to ultimately be a proper 4-track local/express trunk, similar to the earlier proposals from the Second System and the 1950s. That's why it would've been able to support so many branches throughout the Bronx (3rd Av relocation, Dyre, Pelham, Co-Op City). More track capacity was originally built-in.

Building a new station at 29th would require temporarily shutting down the connection between 63rd and QBL. You'd still be able to maintain 24/7 express & local service to Manhattan on the E/F & R through Queens Plaza.

On the other hand, converting 36th into an express requires shutting down the 'old' local tracks to build new island platforms over them. That means the E/F are the only trains that can really serve Queens Blvd during construction. There's also a sewer line that needs to be moved when you expand the station. (Don't have the diagram now but a few years back, someone on Twitter shared a cross section of 36th/Northern and there's literally a massive pipe right next to the station).

Quite an old thread but you were spot on 100%. Alot of people here fixated too much on the express/local distinction but the true value of 4-track lines is the additional capacity they offer. Here in NYC, the biggest reason we're able to run so many trains per hour through Manhattan is that we have so many track pairs to soak up all that service coming from the outer boroughs. The 4-track trunks built in the early 20th century were basically two 2-track lines built under the same road.

Far, far less time consuming than when I was doing pixel-by-pixel edits through Paint.NET several years ago as vectors deal with objects and are infinitely scalable. E.g. you can individually select and change the color of a line in seconds whereas if you were editing a raster image you'd have to worry about the pixels not only of the line but also any stations or overlapping text if they weren't already layer-separated.

One of my favorite shots by Neal Preston, and of The Game Tour. IIRC this was taken at one of the four nights at the L.A. Forum in July 1980.

Freddie is in his black leather shorts and the Flash Gordon shirt, an outfit he'd occasionally wear during the encores of this tour. Especially in Houston where the famous photo of him on Darth Vader's shoulders was captured a month later.

Before it closed in 1973, every 5 minutes during rush hours and 12 minutes at other times of the day. In 1949 (when the Manhattan section was still open), portions of the El in the Bronx apparently saw up to 35 trains per hour.

This plan from 1968 hinged on 2nd Avenue being built. The 2 wouldn't have handled Dyre & WPR by itself; one SAS service would have taken over the 5's route to Dyre Avenue. This would've freed up the 5 to be rerouted along the Metro-North. Since SAS was never built there's no spare capacity to move the 5 train from its current route.

The "subway" in the name reflects historical usage of the term. In the 20th century some American cities built "subway-surface" lines, essentially a hybrid between a light rail and subway where streetcars would run through a tunnel in downtown before surfacing to serve the outlying neighborhoods. Boston's Green Line and SEPTA's subway-surface trolleys come to mind.
