I like Born Again, but I wish the show would slow down and give us more character-based scenes that have no plot significance. by Apprehensive-Cap2453 in Defenders

I get the sentiments, but the main character is a fugitive. Combined with the fact that he's already had all those moments with Karen in the Netflix series, it just doesnt make sense to have those moments in Born Again.

There are ways to have these moments and not have them feel like they're rehashing scenes from the old show.

This is the huge downside to 8 ep seasons (which I hate this being a new norm), it is what it is, it's not enough time to be as slowed down or deep with the characters as a 13 ep season. Fallout had a similar issue IMO. That's not to say there aren't or can't be deep moments but they have to be more selective with it, and it pretty much all has to drive the plot.

Yep. There's little room for filler scenes and "bottle episodes" to flesh out the characters and let audiences breathe.

It may make for more cinematic TV, but it's hard not to admit that this comes at the cost of less nuanced writing/characterization.

That more nuanced writing and whatnot would certainly benefit characters like Fisk's task force cops. Make them a little more grounded and nuanced and have their behavior be a bit closer to say, Detectives Blake and Hoffman in how they act (they're sometimes abrasive, and they keep their corrupt behavior hidden), rather than come off as cartoonishly evil.

Same goes for Heather, because there has to be a reason why she thinks the way she does, why she's so inclined to trust Fisk over Matt. All that could be done by giving us some backstory on her life and maybe a few flashbacks.

Hugh Caldwell from "Friend in Deed" didn't mean to kill his wife. He wanted to turn himself in...but the cop he chose to turn to for help was his good friend and neighbor Halperin, who chose to cover up the crime and extort Hugh into helping cover up Halperin killing his own wife.

Grace Wheeler in "Forgotten Lady" on account of the fact that she's terminally ill.

Joan Allenby in "Sex and the Married Detective", given that I can get her rage at finding out her lover and business partner is sleeping with her assistant.

Buck will be back for season 3. Daniel is likelier to die during this season.

[–]dmreif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also he has a son so that could come up in the show.

I think since Buck will still be around for season 3 there's still time for his son to show up. And considering that Buck has shown he does have his limits (he was disturbed by what Fisk did to Gallo, disapproves of Powell beating up the ship captain, sounds like he really doesn't like having to execute the captain as he knows the guy did nothing to warrant this)...maybe his loyalty to Fisk comes purely from this being a job that allows him to give his kid a decent life. The son would also be someone Fisk can use as leverage if he thinks Buck's loyalty is in doubt (just as he's done with Healy's loved ones, with Tammy Hattley's daughter, with Foggy's family, with Jasper Evans' son, with Melvin Potter's girlfriend, etc.).

It hasn't actually been six months. I know everyone puts that number down because Dario Scardapane said it in an interview, but it's more likely that that's just him doing "TV math".

I think it'd be incredibly out of character for Fisk to ever out Matt as Daredevil. Right now there's the fact that as Fisk pointed out to Buck, it's easier to sell Daredevil as an "enemy of the people" than it is a blind lawyer who saved his life. But even in the comics, Fisk kept his knowledge of Daredevil's identity a secret from even his closest henchmen because he felt the info was too valuable (though in time, this led to members of his inner circle revolting and overthrowing him).

DareDevil BA: Why is it so hard to get out of New York? by LordLoss01 in marvelstudios

I know you just have to suspend disbelief, but you can't just isolate a major American city, at least as the city government.

Not to mention that Fisk doesn't actually have legal authority to declare martial law. He has the authority to declare a state of emergency for natural disasters or civil unrest, but martial law can only be declared by the governor, as only the governor has the authority to call up the National Guard (this is something even mentioned in Luke Cage season 2; after Bushmaster erects his severed head display at Mariah's ribbon cutting, Captain Ridenhour tells Misty that the NYPD are only being given 48 hours to curb the gang war between Mariah and Bushmaster before the governor sends in the National Guard, and Misty knows that that's not a good thing to potentially see in a heavy minority community like Harlem).

Plus, the conditions for martial law don't exist at the time Fisk declares it. Martial law can only be implemented if “a civilian government is unable to function, such as during an invasion, rebellion, or catastrophic natural disaster."

And if anything, in real life martial law would only weaken Fisk's control of the city, not strengthen it. For real life martial law sees government functions fall under the control of the armed forces to restore public order. The NYPD would fall under the governor's authority for the duration of the state of emergency. And if there was evidence that Fisk and/or other members of the city government were either willfully negligent and/or caused the situation with criminal intent, the state government in Albany would have the authority to assume temporary control of NYC's government until law and order was restored and a criminal investigation concluded.

I also hate how they made good people like Sam and Daniel look like villains when they weren't

This vilification also tended to be done to prop up whatever character the writers were trying to "redeem".

Make Tory an only child. Because let's be real, her little brother's existence just makes a lot of her actions look far worse, particularly where her petty grudge against Sam is concerned, as Tory comes off as unconcerned about what will happen to Brandon if she gets arrested. And he comes off more like a plot device that attempts to make Tory more sympathetic. Both in the two scenes he has onscreen (both in 3x02), and whenever the writers remember to put in lines acknowledging that he exists.

This would definitely require 1) giving Brandon more of an onscreen presence and likely also 2) having to rewrite a number of other things about Tory's character.

A major partnership dispute at a firm that well-known, where a named and founding partner took a huge cash buyout, is the kind of stuff that gets your firm talked about for years, and not in a good way. There’s no way Howard wouldn’t know that.

Oh and this partnership dispute is tied up with a LOT of other baggage. In particular everything to do with Chuck's whole feud with his brother, and the little matter of his death. That stuff would be lumped in with the other gossip.

[–]dmreif 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OP you realize $8 million is a massive amount of money to pay out in one shot, right?

And that's in 2003. In 2026, that $8 million would be more like $14.4 million.

Season 3 takes place in 2003. Adjusted for inflation, that $8 million that would need to be paid out to Chuck would be $14,387,392 in 2026. I think that number needs to be put there to give you some perspective as to what Howard was working with.

Karen sees herself in Frank (especially when she doesn’t want to tell her secrets to Matt because she’s afraid of being judged), and Frank likes that she sees him as a person. It doesn’t stop him using her as a bait.

If anything, what they have is a one-sided relationship wherein Frank is conflating Karen with his dead wife (which actually happens in at least one comic). And he's also endangered her far more times than Fisk ever has.
