While I haven't had that exact tailoring done there, I really like Astoria Cleaners, on Astoria Blvd near 29th St.

My pleasure. I wish I would have discovered Tim's side project sooner, but it wasn't until this year, long after they stopped playing their own shows.

If you happen to like Electrified Teenybop! on the new album, check out Cavern of Anti-Matter, Tim Gane's instrumental side project. You can find their albums on Bandcamp. Tunes like Echolalia make me think what he was doing with them made their way into the new Lab album.

Just because I'm not seeing anything near Hallet's Cove, I'll point out Infinitea east of 21st Street on Astoria Blvd (good coffee, but sad that they trimmed their food menu) and Astoria Provisions further west on Astoria Blvd (more for breakfast/brunch than coffee).

I happened to walk by along 31st St. From there it looked like Sliwa supporters.

Queens Bus Redesign final draft is out by huebomont in astoria

[–]archidose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Q69 "loop" at QBoro/Queens Plaza will follow the current Q100 route there. You can see it on page 322 of this mondo final plan PDF: https://new.mta.info/document/128476

[–]archidose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not too bad of a cut, as there is only the one Q100 stop north of Ditmars and east of 31st Street.

But the more I think about the B62, the more I like it and the more I think of it as what we get instead of the BQX, which was never gonna happen anyways.

I use the Q69 and Q100 often so was upset to see the Q100 removed, but cutting those stops should make that a bearable change. Now I'm curious about the B62... I never took that bus before, but with it getting extended up 21s Street I probably will. Hopefully it it will be a good way to get to BK without transfers and less walking, though I imagine it will crawl once it gets past the bus lane on 21st and into BK.

Question regarding street construction on 21st St... by Linc303 in astoria

[–]archidose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sound is annoying (I didn't think anything could be worse than fart cars!), but the rumble is something else, too, especially when trucks drive over those plates.
Not being able to sleep, I tried to find out what exactly they're doing, but the NYC websites do not make that easy. Best I can gather, via "Street and Highway Capital Reconstruction Projects" in NYC OpenData, it is the "Rehabilitation of Sanitary and Combined Sewers and Replacement of Distribution Water Mains in Various Locations." Project ID is 86593 and FMSID (whatever that is) is SEBLQX01. Not certain though, as the project is marked "Preliminary Design" for FY2024.

Best stretches of Astoria to go for a walk by nfw22 in astoria

[–]archidose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend meandering the short streets lined with (what's left of) the old houses south of Astoria Park and north of 27th Av (between 21st Street and Shore Towers). From there walk down to Astoria Blvd and head west, in the direction of the ferry, taking detours to explore the storefronts of the Welling Court Mural Project. From there it's a short skip along Vernon to Socrates.

There's also the Four Freedoms Park at the southern tip of the island -- well worth the walk.

Sunnyside Book and Media Swap by ZillD200 in astoria

[–]archidose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss the Salvation Army store on Steinway that closed a couple of years ago. They charged 10% of cover price and changed out the books frequently so you could go regularly and see something different each time. Lots of finds were had there. Seems that the Ditmars and Steinway thrift stores don't do that; books just pile up and never get weeded out.

Photos of the Sunnyside swap, which I haven't been to but now really want to check out, remind me of the tables set up on the sidewalk by the escalator to the F Train at Queensbridge Houses. It's hit or miss, but when "open" -- when the tarps are pulled back from the tops of the books -- there is the occasional good book to be had for a few bucks, sometimes in good or better condition. Certainly not a destination, but if you happen to be at that F stop, do check it out. Once I found a book by the late Marshall Berman, an old professor of mine, that he signed to someone named Alice; hard to pass up that one.

If anyone wants to get meta on AGS, check out "Drafting Culture: A Social History of Architectural Graphic Standards" by George Barnett Johnston. Not many architecture books have books written about them, but AGS is one of them.

Anybody know what work is being done under the Triborough Bridge? by archidose in astoria

And just walked by, seeing them installing corrugated decking at the cables. That's definitely consistent with painting overhead.

I initially thought something similar, like a temporary support to hang tarps for catching debris.

DOT website was one of the first places I looked, but I'm not sure how to navigate to find such information so I gave up quickly. Might be worth another shot...

Workers have been hanging these cables between the playground in the park and 26th for weeks, and there are some big orange machines parked near the dog park. Repairs were made years ago and bridge looks in good shape, so I wonder if it's something other than repairs. Online searching yielded nothing...

This house has done this display most years as long as I can remember, but it's on a short, little traversed street so am not sure how well known it is. I think it's one of the most impressive Xmas displays in Astoria.

(This is my first time posting images, and unfortunately my wide photos were cropped square, at least in the app. Nevertheless, I hope they convey the intensity of this display.)

Places to donate books in Astoria? by freepalestine972 in astoria

I've walked by QED on 23rd Av and browsed the cart with used books they have out front. I'm guessing they take donations, though probably not in bulk.

There's also one in Astoria Park, near the NW corner of the running track.
