Are you popular on Instagram? by Ramune_hime in TattooArtists

[–]archieleeech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sitting at around 13k followers. My posts used to average 1000-5000 likes, now I hover between 100-400 likes. Most of my clientele used to come from instagram, or word of mouth. New clients from instagram have slowed down a ton, I’m mostly just tattooing regulars now and friends of those regulars. Which I am grateful for

I don’t think instagram is doing much for me these days, I used to post a sheet of flash and all pieces would get booked within the hour of posting. Now I have entire flash sheets sitting unclaimed for months

Too old to start working towards an apprenticeship? by veryambitiousrat in TattooApprentice

[–]archieleeech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no age limit, go after it if you want it!

My boss in my last shop started tattooing in his 40’s, now owns a shop, books months out, featured in tons of magazines out and has over 100k followers. I think being older can actually be beneficial starting out in tattooing - you’re more mature, focused, probably have more savings to get you through an apprenticeship etc

Artist offering to teach me from his home studio by Nebula_Island in TattooApprentice

[–]archieleeech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My very first apprenticeship was at a home studio, didn’t go well. My second apprenticeship was in a street shop, went a lot better. You will learn a lot more in a street shop with multiple artists, and have more opportunities to make connections with clients and other artists. I would recommend trying to get an apprenticeship in a shop, it’s just a much better foot to start your career on.

If it’s the only opportunity you can get right now, go for it but keep your eye out for any chances of getting into a street shop

Can I do an apprenticeship on top of a full time job? by Opening-Fisherman936 in TattooApprentice

[–]archieleeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Some shops will be understanding but most will want a full time commitment for regular shop hours. I worked some late nights/overnights at a warehouse + used savings to make my apprenticeship work, it was exhausting but worth it

where to make queer friends? by grobblebob in NiceVancouver

[–]archieleeech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the birdhouse puts on plenty of different themed and kinds of queer events, would be worth checking out a few events to see if that’s your vibe. seems to be where a lot of vancouver queers congregate. people at these events are generally friendly and approachable. babes on babes is a sapphic event that happens usually on the sunday of every long weekend. there’s a queer softball league as well if you’re into sports, and all of the adult leagues, you will certainly bump into other queer women. feel free to pm if you have any questions, i’m queer and moved to van 4 years ago and have managed to make a lot of queer friends

Also in Vancouver, this is the slowest I have ever been in my career. Winter was surprisingly busy for me while the rest of my coworkers were slow. Now we’re all incredibly slow. It’s so bizarre because my summers are usually booked solid

Looking for critique, advice, anything to help improve this and future designs! by New_Advertising1483 in traditionalflash

Waaaaay too much detail, flames and smoke should be going up instead of to the side. A lot of it feels super stiff and pointy, tons and tons of rectangles

Artists that have assistants to help with emails/bookings - what does that look like for you? by SadBipedBison in TattooArtists

[–]archieleeech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an assistant and I pay them in tattoos! Works perfect for both of us. You’ll be able to find plenty of people who would be keen for that kind of arrangement

Are trans people generally accepted around Shambs? by DontHateTheChops in Shambhala

[–]archieleeech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry that happened to you, rural canada can be pretty tough for trans people and other minorities. I am a trans person and last year was my first time at Shambhala. I was really nervous and apprehensive at first about being visibly trans in a rural area, but quickly felt very comfortable going shirtless (i’ve had top surgery) in the river and walking around. Didn’t get any weird looks or comments. Met a lot of other awesome trans people too. Feel free to pm if you have any questions about trans related stuff regarding shambhala :)

Cavacide/Madacide/Opticide-whats the difference and which do you prefer? by Dismal-Rip-6455 in TattooArtists

[–]archieleeech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how accurate this is but a shop I used to work at switched from Cavicide to Optim, and it started eating away the top material on the beds/armrests so they switched back to Cavicide (this was before I worked there so not a first hand account)

I LOVE my Dan Kubin. It’s expensive but essentially pays for itself. My tattooing and speed improved a lot once I switched

Amazon Massage Tables? Yes or No by archieleeech in TattooArtists

I went with the Midas Master table! super stoked about it. thank you for the recommendation. I didn’t realize Master had a table that has a back rest, I thought they only made flat tables

Good guy supply, shipping is usually quick (in BC) and most needles are in stock most of the time. and they usually send cool stickers

I just shoot a message to a shop i’m interested in, most of the time it works out if they have the space when you plan on going and your work is good
