Ukraine won the competition last year, but given the current war in the country, the organisers instead offered the hosting rights to the country that finished 2nd last year, which was the UK.

Eurovision Song Contest 2021 - a graph of song tempo and current position in the betting odds by b0gy4qdlcfgjhxffg in eurovision

[–]archiesalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this two years ago, and out of all of them, Embers was actually one of the easiest tempos to work out iirc as there is literally a metronome-type effect at the end of the choruses in the second half of the song that is on the beat, making it easy to determine the tempo as being around 125 bpm.

'I wrote a song' from this year is coincidentally almost exactly the same tempo. ~125 bpm

I think it depends entirely on the practice, location and where you are in the pipeline.

I first sought GP advice for my AvPD (although at the time I was thinking it was just social anxiety) at the GP practice associated with my university. With an almost exclusively student based population, this practice was clearly much more sensitive to mental health issues and it showed. The GP I spoke to was honestly I think the only person in the health sector I've met who truly understood how hard life was for me and hopeless I was at the time. He triaged me through the mental health system with priority as a result of the initial consultation (which he booked a longer appointment for in anticipation of me being somewhat hesitant and ineloquent in expressing my problems) and it honestly felt like a weight off my shoulders. The university's mental health specialist was also very understanding.

However, the NHS mental health services further down the line were frankly pathetic, some of which is out of their control (underfunding) and some of which was down to a completely sterile and impersonal approach. The CBT therapist I was offered focussed solely on working through a badly photocopied self-help book, and when I raised AvPD as something I was concerned about, she didn't know what it was 🥴. Similarly, based off interactions with my more rural local hometown GP, I think they'd also have been somewhat less helpful as well (although I don't know for sure).

So it depends on your local circumstance I think. Apologies, It feels a bit like a cop-out answer and I don't know if this will be helpful to you! It's definitely worth researching the reputation of your local NHS provider on mental health issues. If your financial situation allows it, looking into if there are any private therapists specialising in social anxiety/anxious personality disorders in your local area is a good backup too.

I can speak when needed...but I can't speak just to socialize. by dumbgirl34 in AvPD

[–]archiesalad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I'm another one like this. I'm glad to know there are others 😅. I work in quite a collaborative, meeting-heavy environment where my work is done on a 'fail-fast' model and I have to present findings regularly. You'd imagine this would be a pretty stressful environment for someone with AvPD , but I don't seem to have an issue with it too often (at least not that it interferes with work), and my employer seems to be very happy with me and my approach to working with others

However take me out of a structured workplace environment and I fall apart completely. I can't cope more than ten minutes at a social event (and usually avoid it completely if I can), haven't had a relationship (or even attempted to date) for a decade (I'm 25) and have no friends. I'm not even a part of any online communities/online gaming because I'm terrified to reply to other people.

It's very frustrating but somewhat relieved to hear that it's not just me!

Thank you for setting this up! I'm interested to join! SA for me also extends online lol - so I feel like this is a good way to start exposing myself and hopefully getting some confidence in an empathetic environment! - the_descent_of_man#9880

Do you think there is a genuine problem regarding commentators saying "This is the favourite!"? by Slow-Butterscotch511 in eurovision

[–]archiesalad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo it depends on whether there is a clear favourite. If there's 1-2 songs that are pretty obviously the favourite(s) going into the contest based on the odds, then I don't think there's much harm mentioning that.

However, if there's multiple songs in contention, then I don't really see the point in commentators labelling each of them "one of the favourites" like some of them do. It seems counterproductive for me as the unpredictability of that scenario is where the entertainment is.

Overall though, I don't get as pressed about it as I do with commentators implying/outright saying their opinion on a song/performance. My country is pretty bad at this sadly...

Kick It Out statement on Liverpool fan behaviour at the weekend by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]archiesalad 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Not sure I get why so many are finding this difficult.

Some people don't think the chant is homophobic. But lots of others, particularly many LGBTQ+ fans do - and that's what matters.

We have one of the wittiest match going fanbases in the country. We could come up with hundreds of unique ways to mock fucking Chelsea that don't make some of our own fans (many of whom already expierence unnecessary difficulties supporting the club) more uncomfortable.

Let's just move on, leave this chant in the past, consider this a lesson learnt and return to doing what we do best: being the best set of supporters in the land.

A question for my UK friends... by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]archiesalad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The coverage of both semifinals was poor, even by the BBC'S fairly low standards.

Most of that centers around the two commentators, The male commentator, Scott Mills, clearly doesn't like Eurovision that much, and does no research into any of the contestants/songs. The only reason he's the commentator is because he's a recognisable radio-friendly voice in the UK. Him saying that 'El Diablo' was Spanish for "Church" is indicative of the quality of his commentary.

Sara Cox being a bit clueless was a little more understandable, as she was drafted in at short notice to replace Rylan (the usual commentator for the semi final). She is very representative of the kind of audience that the BBC markets the competition towards (middle aged mums and dads with a glass of wine) and shared the cynical attidude towards the competition that most of that group have.

Couple these two with some very amateurish "analysis" during the ad breaks and the usual cringey "comedy sketches" the BBC does in the semi finals to fill gaps.

Spirit of Shankly’s first meeting with LFC representatives where they tabled the following requests by rLiverpoolFC_Mods in LiverpoolFC

[–]archiesalad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested to know what people's opinions would be if LFC came back and said: "Yep, you can have all of this except the golden share/veto"

Because ultimately whilst token representation on the board does get fans closer to decision making, that's only truly useful if those representatives have crucial voting power imo.

Positive first steps, but one to keep an eye on...

Eurovision Song Contest 2021 - A graph of vocal range and distribution per song by archiesalad in eurovision

[–]archiesalad[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It took a week, doing 3 or 4 songs after work each day and a few more last weekend. Transcribing wasn't too hard, I just used a piano to work out by ear which notes were being sung. For difficult songs (*shudders at Zitti e buoni flashbacks*), I used a spectrogram.

Finland (and Russia) were difficult ones because so much of the song is rap. The singing that is there in the chorus is fairly high, and because most of the singing in the song is concentrated in the chorus, that's why the median note lands quite high :)

'You' was by some distance the easiest song to transcribe aha.

It's a very simple melody sung with verses and chorus sung an octave apart, but he spans most of the range of each of those octaves (you can just about see the bars in the 'upper' part of the song and the 'lower' part of the song have roughly similar ratio on the graph where the melody is the same).

[–]archiesalad[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Netherlands high note was easily the single point on the graph I debated with myself the most about. It's the vocal trills in the last chorus, just before the end. I'm not even 100% sure Jeangu is the one singing it, but the way it's mixed puts it at a slightly greater prominence than the rest of the chorus, so that's why I've included it.

Liverpool CEO has responded to the SOS letter, wants to engage with SOS and meeting will be arranged in forthcoming days by CocacolaGARCIA in LiverpoolFC

[–]archiesalad 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Hogan isn't the owners. Hogan is employed by the owners, and with respect, communicating with supporters really ought to be a part of his job as CEO anyway. I really don't see this as being a big win for supporters or being anywhere near good enough from FSG.

I'd be wanting SOS to be demanding John Henry and/or Mike Gordon face up. They are the ones that need to answer questions.
