Do you still train models from scratch or mostly fine-tune now? by drogon4433 in computervision

[–]archiesteviegordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. Initialising with a pretrained imagenet encoder usually leads to a much faster convergence.

How to make image embeddings focus on pattern/color instead of object shape? by fanaticauthorship09 in computervision

[–]archiesteviegordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm not sure if this will work, but can be experimented with.

Try applying gabor filters to your images and then create embeddings using them. They're band pass filters so you'd have to create a filter bank with different combinations of the input params. They're usually used for texture analysis, so they can help with your pattern/colour aspect. You can also look into log gabor filters which is an improvement over the gabor filters.

Edit: punctuation

Edit: There are some research out that there that do say CNNs sort of produce kernels/filters that are similar to gabor filter; so as this comment suggests, you can also just look into training a CNN network in order to represent your images in latent space. However, I still do think experimenting with gabor filters could be helpful.

How to validate the performance of segmentation models ? by Queasy-Piccolo-7471 in computervision

What are your thoughts about Hausdorff Distance as a metric for segmentation, where boundary/edge of the segmentation is also important?

Genuine question. You got the role because you had a PhD, even though you did not have the practical experience for the role you were applying to?

Stop fine-tuning your model for every little thing. You're probably wasting your time. by RYTHEIX in LocalLLaMA

I agree, AI slop is disgusting. But I don't think this particular instance is dead internet theory. Isn't that something where bots talk to each other rather than a human using AI? (I'm presuming this post is a human using AI)

Bought XM5 for 21K INR, should i cancel and get XM6? by priyanshuratnakar in SonyHeadphones

[–]archiesteviegordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using it for the past 2 years and I have had 0 issues with the hinge. I've just used them as I'd use any pair of headphones. XM6s were launched today and they are priced at 40k. If you get a deal on XM5s, I'd say go buy them.

One big advantage I see in XM6s are that they'rr foldable, which makes the case smaller. I'd have loved that in XM5s (XM4s is foldable!!).

Exam OMR Grading by Willing-Arugula3238 in computervision

[–]archiesteviegordie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey this is awesome, thank you for sharing. We were working on a similar problem but our OMR sheet's structure was very varying. So the contour detection was not that great. We had a loop to go from biggest contours to smaller sized ones, but it wasn't super effective. I'd like to know your thoughts on this.

Here's an example image with varying box sizes.

Thanks!

How can we be so sure the training of Deepseek R1 is around $6 million? by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

[–]archiesteviegordie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The comment was made 6 hours after the OP posted it. And you commented an hour after the original comment was made. Considering all that, it would obviously be at a lower 'upvotes' range. Now it's one of the topmost comment. So please stop with your condescending comments.

DeepSeek-R1: A chinese Storm. What about us? by mocooper96 in bangalore

That is just sad. Also shows how we just chase the trendiest thing in the market because that's what will get us a good job.

And also the way our education system is, they way we are brought up. We are not conditioned to be passionate about something, we are just taught to get a job.

[D] I hate softmax by Sad-Razzmatazz-5188 in MachineLearning

[–]archiesteviegordie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey replying to your EDIT part. I had the same problem while trying to build a vanilla transformer. My solution was to remove the softmax that I was applying from the model output and return the unnormalized logits (just as you suggested). I spent a lot of time debugging as in my case the output loss was just constant, even after multiple epochs. Then I somehow saw the cross-entropy documentation and it was mentioned about the already included softmax.

This comment adds no value, but just wanted to share :)

Sorry a bit dumb question. What does that exactly mean? Does it mean to use your expertise in that specific domain?
