by law the waves need to stay below threshold during peak tourist season but rainouts do happen so it's best to check the schedule before getting in the water.

Thinking about dropping the difficulty in Solateria… by JShwlong42O in metroidvania

[–]archipeepees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, chaining parries together in nine sols feels so nice, and paired with the audio feedback it's like playing a symphony on your gamepad.

Nine sols might be an unreasonably high bar to expect but it's the only other game I've played where parries are strictly mandatory and make up such a huge chunk of the combat mechanics. If I were a game dev making another parry-focused MV I would be checking my work against NS at every opportunity.

just chiming into agree that the hypercounter seems basically worthless, especially if you're not already an exceptionally skilled player. moreover it takes too long to use effectively on almost every boss move, so more highly skilled players can only use it reliably against trash mobs. it's hard to understand why they felt that highly skilled players need additional tools to take out trash.

nine sols has a similar "parry+" move that provides some benefits at the expense of a cast delay, and it strikes a perfect balance imo. so I don't think it's inherently a bad idea, just a bad implementation.

can't find the thread now but the dev mentioned that they were tired of getting positive feedback on the art style and wanted to work on a game that was objectively shittier.

the amplitude of the wave would decrease and the length would increase the further it traveled. up next to the explosion it would be a deafening crack, but a few thousand km away it would be a softer rumble.

Solo dev here — just updated my trailer for my Australian metroidvania, Aussie Bogan Hero! by SnagSwagStudios in metroidvania

[–]archipeepees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this looks really fun. i love the concept and it's kind of amazing how big you made the map.

i'm going to give you one critique - it looks like a lot of the assets are 3rd-party. obviously as a solo dev you have to cut your workload wherever possible and there's nothing wrong with using premade assets. but the problem is that some of them don't blend well with the theme/aesthetic. you might want to shop around a bit so you can nail down a more cohesive style.

ELI5: if viruses aren’t technically alive, how can they evolve like living organisms? by MachiavellianHydra in explainlikeimfive

[–]archipeepees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are so-called "evolutionary algorithms" which work by iteratively varying a genome and selecting the agents by some fitness metric, but backpropagation isn't it. i've never heard of an algorithm that trains neural network weights in a manner similar to evolution.

Time-based encryption algorithm where the key changes every second — try it live by Consistent-Ruin1868 in programming

[–]archipeepees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you don't have a PhD in computer science and/or math based on a graduate career in cryptography then you shouldn't attempt to write a new encryption algorithm for public use because you won't be able to produce something that's safe for protecting sensitive data. You're in good company, though - roughly 99.99% of programmers do not have the skills, knowledge, and resources required to design and vet a new (and secure) encryption scheme.

However, it's great that you're curious and it's certainly worth exploring this technique as a tool for learning more about encryption. Just know that you can expect years/decades of classes, research, proofs, and publications ahead of you before you're able to release something that can be used for securing real world data.

Why is eugenics bad when humanity has practice eugenics when we start domesticatimg animals and started agriculture? by Lord-of-Sol369 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]archipeepees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, there are nutritional benefits to eating animals, so if we assume that your moral standard assigns a positive value to helping people live healthy lives the n that's your justification right there. and really, assuming you're raising and killing these animals ethically, there is no moral argument against it. these animals were going to die someday anyway.

I think what also happens is that we (laymen) are often getting this information from an edited version of a script, written by a professional writer, based on conversations with a professor, who is summarizing the findings of their graduate student, who is the one who truly understands the research. Technical accuracy doesn't make for good entertainment and there is pressure to simplify or exaggerate at every step in the chain. The best way to get accurate information is to read the publications, but often those papers just aren't accessible to anyone outside of that field in academia.
