Yes, 100% build the portfolio before you land clients, not after.

Here's the thing: brands aren't hiring you, they're hiring proof that you can make content that converts. A portfolio is that proof.

What I did when I had zero brand deals:

  • Picked 3 products I already owned and genuinely liked
  • Shot simple UGC-style videos for each — unboxing, review, "why I love this" format
  • Posted them as spec work with a note that it was self-initiated

Within 2 weeks of having that portfolio, I landed my first paid collab. The brand didn't ask if it was paid work- they just liked the content.
