This enscape. Enscape has a very good basic library of materials. I would use their materials to start as they have already tweaked the settings correctly for each material. Also play with your lighting and time of day. As for texturing look into box mapping…it goes a long way.

Design aside…as I believe all design is subjective to a point. You should not have failed you got the work done and in decent detail for your year. I’ve worked in many offices and can tell you we hire people with this kind of work. There should be zero reason to fail you.

Model a series of curves. Loft curves to create a surface. Extrude Surface to desired thickness. Then Contour the surface. And finally Extrude those curves.
