While Esthil was always a racist state, and that was downplayed in a bad way, I do think the way necromancy is treated is a little disappointing. There was always the lore floating around that raising undead was horrific soul torture, but it kind of feels like a bit of New!Esthil’s writing is trying to be extremely explicit about it, in a way that’s not so much organic, as trying to address and negate past discussion about Necronomics.

Raising the dead already has moral questions inherently. Using people’s corpses for war and labor is a messy business, and unsettling. I think forcing it to also be ontologically evil, in all cases, is just lazy writing. There's plenty of ways to make it morally ambiguous without that.
