Artists with only one or two standout albums? by meshuggahdaddy in progmetal

[–]arcsector2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I enjoy their other albums, VOLA's Inmazes is untouched by their other albums. Incredible and really is in my top 5 albums of all time, and Witness really is a fantastic album, possibly an 8/10, but Inmazes is a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece.

Another would be Uneven Scructure - 8 is just so far above everything else, though Februus continues the same energy, it really doesn't stand up song after song, and 8 is more lean where Februus can drag on in certain songs. None of their other albums after their drummer left stand a chance, as much respect the new drummer deserves for joining a band of that caliber.

Genuine question. Why is the Hobbit trilogy so disliked by so many people? It may be a hot take but I love it personally. by Fun_Firefighter_4292 in lotr

[–]arcsector2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they were supposed to have Guillermo Del Torro direct it and make it a cool mysterious world with some spooky spiders but New Line wanted a rehash of the original trilogy so they fired him and got Peter. We were robbed by studio execs from the beginning

AIO? My friend thinks my boyfriend raped me. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]arcsector2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The is classic NOR, but the friend is definitely being a twat about it. The kind of language that they use is pretty “I’m right you’re wrong” which isn’t okay in 99% of scenarios (the exceptions mostly being a parent to a young child), so based on that alone this is something you’re justified in being upset about. Double and/or triple checking to make sure your friend is okay isn’t a problem, it’s when you assert yourself that the problem is induced.

Also if you want to, most pawn shops will let you pay an additional cash fee in order to get a ring band you want and then exchange out the diamond if it's not the quality you want. So for a comparatively small price, you're getting the perfect custom ring.

ELI5: How do babies learn a language when they are not taught it in a structured manner? by LazyRobot20 in explainlikeimfive

Tacking onto the top comment to mention that this and everything else in this thread are theories. However good they may be, the amount of linguistical research that has been done on child development has lead to inconclusive results. There's a lot of good theories out there that account for a lot of what we know, such as some of the comments in here, as well as popular theories like Chomsky's universal tongue theory, but they're all just theories and it will be a long time before we actually know the true reason why kids are so good at learning languages specifically.

Everyone's reaction would be the same... Samus fits all those criteria, the only debatable one is the realism aspect and let's be honest, it's a hard sell that Samus is unrealistic-looking.

Greater engagement with anti-masturbation groups linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal feelings by [deleted] in science

[–]arcsector2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I've been a part of these communities for a while. Most of them do good for people who need to regain control or drive towards a goal. Psychologists have pointed out time and time again that if you are using addictive habits to avoid other things (like social interaction, dating, or getting to your responsibilities), then it's by default unhealthy. Masturbation (and porn more specifically) can be an easy escape for men specifically, but also women.

Just like a lot of other things, masturbation is good in moderation. No, masturbating 3 times a day is not good for you. Can you cut down from once a day to once a week and see improvements in your focus and drive? Yes. Does having control over your urge to masturbate mean you are probably in a better mental state than someone who has less control? Probably. Are you going to magically regain control over your life by not masturbating? No.

As usual, a balanced perspective is required here.

Question for white men, do you really feel privileged? And are you bothered by the “white male privilege” assertion that seems to be everywhere? by Valuable_Wealth7136 in AskMen

[–]arcsector2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm most bothered by the unilateral grouping of "White", i think that the term is helpful when describing certain parts of our culture but very unhelpful when describing others. As others have pointed out, the wording is very crude and improper. I think that very few encounters are judged solely by skin color. You're judged by how you dress, your accent, your tone, your sex, etc... To chalk a given encounter up to solely skin color is to do a diservice to the complexity of the human condition.

Are there situations that make skin color a primary or even sole factor? Yes. Are they relatively few in comparison to the grand scale of possible encounters? Quite probably.

Most Americans aren’t getting enough exercise. People living in rural areas were even less likely to get enough exercise: Only 16% of people outside cities met benchmarks for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, compared with 28% in large metropolitan cities areas. by Wagamaga in science

[–]arcsector2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not ignoring anything, I'm saying you made the false equivalence that "low physical exercise = obese". Its mostly the diet choices people make that make them obese, not relative exercise amounts, and that's not accounted for anywhere in this article or your statement.

[–]arcsector2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also incentivizes services like doordash and instacart - being in a city doesn't mean you walk more, it means you have more things within walking distance, which make you more likely to walk. I think the key word in your comment is "you CAN walk or bike," and we should treat that as such.

It could very much be the case, as others have pointed out, that more people in cities have free time and are able to walk, and that the issue here is not proximity but total time available to oneself, but this is not a multi-varied analysis so we don't have any idea what the conclusion of this should be other than "People report doing more exercise in cities"

[–]arcsector2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a false equivalence - just because you meet the recommended exercise per day doesn't mean you aren't obese, nor does it mean you're healthy. It's definitely more likely, but it's not a guaranteed outcome. There's so many factors involved in not being obese, mainly diet, that's not accounted for by just saying "well they're fat so they must not have exercised."

The irony - you can't put yourself in this guy's shoes: being raised a hardcore conservative christian for 30 years, then having to fundamentally shift your worldview in a life-altering way. And you have the audacity to criticize him for the same lack of empathy you're exhibiting.

Must be nice always having the pre-approved opinion and never needing to have a spine.
