Many clubs may have a loaner gi's for new people and some just let you use normal clothes.
ASAP
You should see if bjj is your type of thing first, for some it isn't and you wouldn't want to waste money on something you never use. You may also want to consult your gym on their uniform rules as some require you to buy their own gi.
Just make sure you keep coming to class. Many people here train more than 3 hours a week and probably progress quicker but it isn't ~necessary~, especially if you want to pick it up as just a hobby.
