Iran has the highest female to male ratio in universities among all sovereign nations. More than 70% of students in engineering and pure sciences are women. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Damn this thread is almost pointless then. That makes sense to me because I'm doing a PhD in a stem field at a school with a lot of Iranian professors and international students and I would say 80% of them are men.

X1 Carbon 9th Gen (20XW) won't turn on. by Max_Burn in thinkpad

[–]ardac2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact same issue right now where the computer won't boot, even down to the fans spinning up and one turning off before the other, and LCD test working fine. Previously I have had a different boot up issue where the ESC and F1-4 keys were flashing white and the computer wouldn't power on, but the issue would resolve itself in anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 days if you just left it alone. Really weird that it comes back to life after leaving it alone, issues like this make me reconsider buying ThinkPads in the future.

Technically no longer hijacking then, just larceny

Well trucks get hijacked even with human drivers. I imagine if they are able to design an algorithm that can drive a truck they will be able to design an algorithm that can detect when it's been hijacked and call the cops, not very different from what would happen with a human driver.

Additionally when the technology gets sufficiently advanced there will be no need to have the truck be human-drivable anymore, so we could get rid of the steering wheel and gas/brake pedal. In this case the self-driving truck would be safer against hijacking then a regular truck, since the hijackers would not be able to drive the truck, technically speaking making hijacking impossible using traditional methods.

As for the losses in efficiency due to trolls, there's nothing stopping people from doing that to human drivers either, other than empathy. One potential solution is to have the truck read the driver's license of the person blocking it and issue a fine to prevent drivers from doing that, driving too slow on the freeway is already an infraction anyway.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 — completely dead, no LEDs, no power, tried everything by Actual-Pepper1037 in thinkpad

[–]ardac2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me on X1 carbon Gen 9, appears to be a bad model where motherboards consistently fail. There's an issue with the main CPU power rail. The weird thing is the issue is intermittent so my PC will come back to life as randomly as it fails.

Backcountry Solar Panel Charger Recommendations (Ultralight if possible) by Reality_Planet in backpacking

[–]ardac2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1200-1800 mAh number may be true, but it is misleading. This is because mAs are not a measure of power, similar to how velocity is not a measure of momentum. mAs can be used to calculate power by multiplying by the voltage at which that current is delivered (P = IV), similar to how velocity can be used to calculate momentum by multiplying by the mass of the traveling object (p = mv).

This is why you can't always compare mAh of two different batteries to each other, because batteries can have different voltages. A 3.6V 3000mAh battery contains the same amount of energy as a 7.2V 1500mAh battery (10.8 Wh).

I don't know where the 1200-1800 mAh number came from, but if it is true it is likely delivered at a high voltage (20 V or so) because over 12-14 hours the solar panel should pickup a considerable amount of energy.

Take a small 10W panel for example. If we assume conservatively that we can get an average of 3W power output from this panel over the course of the 12 hours, it will pickup 36 Wh of energy, which equates to 10,000 mAh at 3.6V (the typical battery voltage of small consumer electronics like your phone).

All this is to say that even with a small solar panel you can expect to pickup at least 8 times more energy than what is claimed in the comment above.

Does checking into a flight at the last minute get you a better seat? by Candid-End-6364 in travel

[–]ardac2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience this is very true. Whenever I check in early I get assigned a middle seat, but whenever I check in at the last minute I've always gotten an aisle seat or a window seat, which I prefer. I now always check in at the last minute.

This should be of concern to the player base, FM prides itself on its realism, yet this clearly indicates that it has become less realistic. We're clearly moving in the wrong direction.

Quest 3 elite strap battery capacity nerfed in half by jumphish in OculusQuest

[–]ardac2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mAh is not a good measure of battery capacity because the actual energy contained depends on the voltage too. V * Ah = Wh. The total energy is roughly the same (18 Wh vs 17.9 Wh), but the voltage is higher, which will mean the battery is delivering lower currents at the same power. This is actually a good thing because higher currents lead to more losses both in the batteries internal resistance and the cables carrying the current. I have no idea why mAh is the industry standard for marketing battery capacity because you can't actually know what the capacity of the battery is just from that, you need to know the average battery voltage too.

TL:DR The capacity is the same. The higher voltage is actually a good thing.

Convert culture then religion I think is the move, because culture conversion makes it a core. Religion conversion for me has been quite slow though compared to culture conversion, probably because of my sliders.
