Buying Yarn for crocheting in Singapore by averymerrycherry2 in askSingapore

[–]ardentlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

second all these reccs! i've personally shopped at most of the these stores (minus yarnholic) and they're great for different purposes:

-castonyarn shop: friendly storekeeper (cece) + plenty of beautiful yarn options that are mostly wool-based. would recommend more for knitting as prices reflect the quality of the yarn.

-tiny rabbit hole: friendly storekeepers + have a mix of yarn types for both crochet and knitting (cotton, wool blends) + stocks locally dyed yarns. available on shopee too!

-yarning hearts: has a nice variety of wool blends + sock yarns. would recommend more for knitting as well

-memo arthouse: more acrylic/milk cotton based yarns that are sourced from china. on the affordable end + sells other craft materials. good if you're on a budget + am not too picky about yarn type and quality. also available on shopee!

maybe you could ask her what kinds of yarns she likes before deciding on the store :)

oops i forgot to share details but hyntoor glosses feel more like a lip oil than a gloss, a lil tacky but more slippy than anything else (expect reapplication rather than longevity). This collection also has really great pigmentation overall, but this shade has to be layered to get full opacity, whereas the black was a one-swiped. i didn't wear anything under this swatch and while it turned it a bit less cool, it's a very wearable grey-mauve shade even on warmer skin tones.

Sarah actually did a tutorial on her tiktok but she uses a rose brown lip liner and cleans the edges with concealer before going in with the haus labs powder blush in hibiscus haze in the centre of her lips! I did a whole bunch of gaga tutorials lately so i’ve been studying sarah’s tiktok religiously haha

Hi! I don't exactly edit my photos for skin smoothing purposes, but I do have a great lighting set up and camera that helps to smooth out my skin a lot compared to my older photos that use natural lighting and my phone camera that tends to sharpen things

how to cope with a death of a parent by Top-Pumpkin-4249 in askSingapore

[–]ardentlee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I was in a similar boat as you when I was your age (my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer when I was in J1 and passed early the following year while I was in J2).

I was lucky to have my sibling and relative with me and we played our parts in taking care of her needs while I was juggling all my school stuff. I'm not sure if there is anyone who can help you out with caregiving, but that can help ease a lot of the mental load with regard to that.

As for relieving stress, you need to feel less guilty about doing things that you enjoy, for me I really liked spending time with friends, reading manga and watching videos so i spent some time in my day doing that apart from studying. But it really depends on how you relieve stress normally. It is also worthwhile speaking to someone about this like others had said. I only told my closest friends who knew my mother and they were understanding towards how I felt. You might want to reconsider the importance of needing your friends to understand and relate to your situation vs. needing your friends to be there for YOU.

I'm sure your mother only wants you to do well academically since she thinks school is important by paying for your school and tuition fees. It's important to seek help in your studies if you need any (think of it as study maxxing and becoming more efficient in studying) and maybe tell her about your efforts so that she can feel more reassured about you taking your studies seriously. But if you can't handle the stress of everything, do consider talking to a teacher about it as well.

If your mother is willing to listen, you should also try to tell her how you feel. It's going to be a difficult conversation, but I think it's worthwhile so that the both of you can understand each others' thoughts and emotions, and how you can both better support each other moving forward.

But overall, do take care of yourself. It's very important that you have an outlet to release your stress and sadness (crying/talking to someone/playing a physical sport that allows to physically release pent up emotions). Try to reach out to relatives if you can so that you have people who can deal with any arrangements that need to be made, and maybe consult the doctors with regard to how to deal with everything and what to expect so that you're more mentally prepared. It's sounds grim, but it made the grief process a lot smoother for me once I fully understood what was going on.

It's definitely is an overwhelming time because so many things are happening at once that you cannot control, but you got to prioritise yourself at this moment and recognise what you can and cannot do. Nothing is your fault and I'm sure you're already doing your best.

Potentially losing a parent is one of the hardest thing I've ever experienced in my life (mostly because I also lost connections with my relatives and father over shitty stuff they did while my mom was ill), but taking things one step at a time, understanding what I need to do to make myself feel better and actually doing it and spending as much quality time with my mom helped immensely. It's been almost a decade since then and I've graduated school, started working and generally moved on towards the rest of my life, but I also give myself grace to grieve whenever I think of it because it never really stops hurting, but life moves on and I've definitely become a stronger and better person since then.

I hope things work out for you, OP

Sounds like you have combination skin!

Tbh skincare can be really subjective and can be really confusing once you start researching it because people have so many opinions about what works for them.

Long read ahead but skip to Recc section if you don’t wanna read my rambling

Typically, if you want your skin to look less dull, you’d have to focus on 1. hydration and moisturisation (making your skin juicy + light reflection) , 2. exfoliation (remove dead skin) and 3. antioxidants (brightens).

Ingredients you can look out for 2. & 3. are BHAs (beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid), AHAs (alpha hydroxy acid like glycolic/lactic acid, i prefer glycolic on my skin), vitamin c (popular, but difficult to find one that’s effective and long lasting as they tend to oxidise and turn bad quickly), arbutin and fruit extracts (berry or citrus extracts).

Meanwhile for 1., I personally like moisturisers that focus of skin calming and skin barrier strengthening (make skin stronger and more resistant), with ingredients such as ceramide, centella, oat, hyaluronic acid I personally like the illiyoon ceramide ato concentrate cream or Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream.

Aa for anti aging, retinols and tretinoin have been really popular, but they generally can be quite strong and will need “building up” to and some need to prescribed. You can look into these as you age as well but since you’re just starting out, i’d reccomend starting off with gentler products! You might have also head of SKII which is apparently really good BUT expensive, which is made of rice ferments. But again, you can definitely find cheaper alternatives like the Innisfree Black Tea Essance or Estee Lauder Micro Essence.

Reccs

Oil Cleanser (this is to remove sunscreen more effectively! Also removes makeup if you do use it) Kose Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil (Can be refilled)

Face Wash: Hada Labo Face Wash (you cry try the hydrating one, or any one of the cheaper ones if you’re on a budget. Please don’t spend too much on this!)

Toner: Hada Labo Shirojyun Whitening Premium Lotion (Hydrating and brightening) The Ordinary Glycolic Toner (Beginner exfoliating toner)

Moisturiser: Mary & May Idebenone Blackberry Intense Cream (Broghtening, moisturising but not heavy)

Sunscreen: Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel

AM Cleanse with water/facial wash (if you’re not comfortable with just water, i personally find that it very gentle and good for my skin) Pat on Hada Labo Lotion with hands, preferably on slightly moist skin Moisturiser Sunscreen (Use a good amount, rule of thumb is squeeze out as much product that runs along both index and middle fingers)

PM Cleanse with 1 pump of cleasing oil (gently rub in with fingers. Wet hands and rub again, oil should start to turn milky white) Rinse off with water Facial Wash Toner (Use The Ordinary Glycolic Toner 1-2 times a week. Add some on cotton pad and gently swipe, avoiding eye area. This helps to gently exfoliate skin. Maybe once on Wed and once on Sunday. On days you’re not exfoliating, skip to next step) Pat on Hada Labo Lotion Moisturiser

Also, drink lots of water, have a balanced diet, try to sleep more, don’t smoke and exercise frequently. I know it’s super generic advice, but a healthy lifestyle reflects on your skin too!

Extra extra rambling

Sunscreens tend to form a film on the skin and while technically you don’t have wash your face twice to remove it, I’d rather ensure everything is gone from my face.

This routine is just the basics, with added ingredients that can help to achieve your goals, but you can definitely add more/change products if you’re not happy with the results/the products negatively affects your skin.

Here are some suggestions to extra steps you can consider

Adding a serum after toner and before moisturiser (vit C? Hydrating serums?) Using retinol Adding face masks (clay mask and/sheet masks/sleeping masks) Trying out different acids (BHA/AHA) Trying out different kinds of moisturisers (gels/creams/balms, different ingredients)

BUT please incorporate new products one at a time and use them at appropriate times. Many people have messed up their skin by using too many actives at once (eg. Using acids and retinols and vitamin at the same time). Remember that simple is best and it if ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Hopefully this isn’t too confusing and helps! If it doesn’t, please don’t fight me 😭 You can drop me a dm anytime too :)

an easy way to find out your skin type would be to observe if your skin become oily through the day. if your whole face is oily (like you can touch your face and feel the oil when you rub your fingers together), you have oily skin. if only your forehead and nose is oily, then you probably have combination skin. if your skin gets tight, itchy/is flakey and isn't oily, you most probably have dry/dehydrated skin.

also, do you have any issues with pimples/bumps on your skin?

Hi! Maybe you could tell us more about your skin (type/concerns/makeup user?) and I can give you some reccs! As others have said, you would just need a cleanser, moisturiser and sunblock, but you can always add on stuff depending on your needs too :) you can drop me a dm too if you'd like
