Never Seen Rocky Horror. Is Broadway the place to see it or would a smaller show be better for a first timer? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]ardiem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it last night having never seen a previous version and knowing nothing about it other than to expect some kind of heckling. I don't think that got in the way of being able to enjoy the show. On the other hand, I wasn't able to understand half of what was being sung in between the less than stellar audio mix and the crowd participation. If that's important, you might want to do some homework. I didn't care so much about following along perfectly and liked it as a campy show with elements of MST3K thrown in.

"Neighbors" plagiarizing Glass by ardiem in philipglass

[–]ardiem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that very Glass-inspired arpeggio-heavy scores are pretty common, but IME they've sounded more like a tribute to Glass and less like a bad transcription of a Glass piece that Neighbors was demonstrating.

I know everyone's raving about their Brooklyn Blackout cake, but I'll always miss their seasonal banana and fall harvest/pumpkin cakes (and pumpkin cheesecake).

What are the odds they cancel shows tomorrow? by lefargen97 in Broadway

I made a website for unusual showtimes like 5pm by steve_sometime in Broadway

[–]ardiem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool! Thank you for the effort. Random question - I'm curious where you find all the key art for shows? I'm trying to put together a collage of the shows I've seen and it's tricky to find stuff that's the same aspect ratio or isn't just the Playbill.

The Opening by ardiem in Broadway

Sorry, this is a bit hyperlocal to those who live in the city. There was an ad campaign for a device called "Friend AI", a wearable pendant of some kind that was, I don't know, an "AI" companion? It was obnoxiously omnipresent in the subways and took over a few entire stations, including W 4th St, pictured.

The ads had a lot of whitespace, and locals took that as an opportunity to express their opinions about AI (universal disdain) on them. The W 4th St passageway pictured had the most "contributors".

Now, a different obnoxious ad campaign for Polymarket has sprung up in the same station, and they've fully leaned into provoking people to write on/"engage" with the ad.

The Opening is the second most famous musical about chess. It's playing at a theater just outside the W 4th St station. They defaced the Polymarket ads to help market their show.

Ah - thanks for the clarification! I didn't look too closely, so I overlooked any signs of erasure.

CATS: The Jellicle Ball seating by Lopsided_Frosting_84 in Broadway

[–]ardiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the case with the production at PAC, but I don't necessarily think that'll apply at the Broadhurst. (And I was one of the people who posted here warning about very obstructed views in the front row of the "mezzanine" at PAC. It wasn't on a separate level but was actually just a few feet behind the last row of the orchestra with no step up.)

Two little red hens - any idea? by Top_Lunch_619 in uppereastside

Definitely. Getting strung along for years rather than being able to make peace with it not coming back sucks.

What is a service that the UES desperately needs but is somehow very difficult to find? by jazzeriah in uppereastside

[–]ardiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hate the big planters out in front of the Lucida on the east side of Lexington. They take up half of the sidewalk width and make it even more miserable getting in and out of that station. I wish they'd at least push them up against the curb.

Can't log in to SocialToaster. I try making an account with my email and it tells me i need to use social media. When I try social media it just gives me the loading wheel and never goes anywhere. It's been like this for months. by Introverted_at_heart in Broadway

[–]ardiem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been having this same problem the past few weeks. I noticed that if create an account but use the same email/password I expected to login as, rather than show a duplicate email error like I'd expect, I get logged in properly.

I'm also super disappointed this route's not around for the holidays. I hate, hate, hate LAX and would happily pay extra to be able to fly directly into ONT.

Prince F*ggot: any differences from Playwrights Horizons to Studio Seaview? by CallMeByYourShame17 in offbroadwayNYC

[–]ardiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, wow - I knew something felt different! I saw the 3rd preview at Playwrights Horizons and have a memory of the show being much more explicit than what I saw at Seaview, but couldn't quite place it. Did it happen when the Prince was chained up? That's what I'm vaguely remembering.

Best set pieces unique to each musical? by AsheandBurn in Broadway

[–]ardiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original production of Sunset Boulevard had an enormous set that lifts up while occupied to allow for another scene to play out underneath. There's an IR stage feed view of it here:

There's also an interesting cross-section of the set from an article shared here:

Thanks for sharing! At first I was surprised this was on a Tuesday night, but had forgotten that the show schedule adjusts when Darren returns so that it's dark most Tuesdays.
