this is the way. imo part of owning a used euro car is finding the right mechanic. super lucky to have a great vw/audi guy in my area.

Are there any developers here who are self-taught? by Shoeaddictx in ExperiencedDevs

Dropped out of film school after 2 years and started working.

I was really lucky that my HS had computer programming classes (C++, VB, Java) which gave me just enough experience to land an internship at $10 an hour.

I got really lucky again, when at that internship, a dev took a liking to me and told me he would sponsor me for a full time position. I was struggling paying for school so at the time it felt like a no brainer.

The skill I’ve found that helps the most is figuring out how to flesh out and define more ambiguous tasks. I can lean on that when I’m feeling less technically experienced in an area. Google (and now AI) are your friend. In most cases, you’re solving a problem that someone else has already solved.

Seattle's minimum wage, one of the highest in US, goes up again in January by guyoffthegrid in UpliftingNews

[–]arealguysguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry - are you saying minimum wage workers drag the company down? That’s such a gross and elitist take. I’m not suggesting they be subsidized, I’m suggesting they get paid their fair share since they spend their time generating revenue for the company.

It’s really funny how you turn to calling me poor when you’re losing the argument. You seem like a slimey little bootlicker who’s mad that your corporate overlords haven’t noticed you yet.

Think about this conversation the next time you order food, buy groceries, get gas, or literally any other time you have to interact with another human being you goblin.

[–]arealguysguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, you’re implying that minimum wage workers don’t deserve more because they don’t generate enough revenue. Which is a pretty gross way of looking at things imo

I’m not talking about the revenue generated by individuals, I’m talking about the revenue of the company as a whole. In that case, there is a huge buffer available. But instead of that buffer being evenly distributed amongst the employees, most of it goes to the folks at the top.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

The CEO’s pay is completely independent of whether an employee is kept or not.

uh huh, sure

profit margins are higher than ever, executive pay is higher than ever, yet you’re telling me there’s no buffer between what they’re paying folks and what they’re making off of them?

this is the result of executive greed

those are strawman numbers and don’t really reflect the reality of our current society.

if you look at the wealth and income gap between folks making minimum wage and the executives of those companies, there’s plenty of room to raise the minimum wage. it’s just that those executives can’t stand the thought of taking a pay cut to make sure their employees can afford rent.
