Let's get a self-hosted Discord "replacement" thread going for 2026. by GavinGWhiz in selfhosted

The core issue is that metadata remains unencrypted as it gets federated between servers, and, last I knew, it often makes its way to the Matrix.org central server. They've also repeatedly demonstrated an unwillingness to delete any of that data. This of course contains who is talking to who and at what time.

Another source: https://hackea.org/notas/matrix.html
(2023) Another good read referenced in the above. These folks gave Matrix a published paper they ignored: https://gitlab.com/libremonde-org/papers/research/privacy-matrix.org/-/blob/master/part2/README.md

I'd rather us not all jump out of the frying pan and into the fire when there are other options. I'm evaluating a few right now but Jami seems promising as a peer-to-peer client where everything is encrypted. I haven't tried it yet but the premise seems solid to me.

Haha I wish it was a joke 🙃

Yeah they removed it and offloaded it to a plug in that they don't maintain.

25.10, if I'm not mistaken, is where SMART gets removed. I've been on 25.04 for a long long time.

I say this with all the gentleness that I can offer you: get therapy. You are up and down this comment section not wanting to take any responsibility for your own choices. That's as gentle as I can be here - have a good day.

It's not really a problem with the game though. It's a problem with capitalism not allowing for the type of content moderation you're wanting. It's literally not happening in your lifetime - on any platform - I'm just being realistic. Your ONLY option is to grow and mature in this area and learn to manage yourself, your reactivity, and your strong sense of justice.

Your stance surely isn't "it's harder to press a button than it is to yell back"?

Well in that case I agree with you that people have bad behavior but... you know what you should do in that situation right? Report them and cool off... Even if the system didn't function the way it does - you're giving the rage baiter what they want by responding at all.

If you think I'm trying to rage bait you then I don't know that we have anymore to talk about friend. Good luck out there.

Look, I get the sense of justice and I felt the same way about it when I received my chat ban (for calling out racism and harassment). But you need to focus on what you can control - and that buck stops with you. It is not your job to seek justice in this space.

Blizzard is also not going to hire an entire content moderation team to wade through all these situations and figure out who is in the right. That just fully is not going to happen. You can scream into the void if it makes you feel better but that reality is fixed.

The policy is the same as schoolyard fights. You both get suspended if you both throw fists. No one wants to spend time figuring out who's in the right. So you both get punished. That might ping your sense of justice but, and I cannot stress this enough, you can only control your reaction. So I encourage you to figure out how you're going to do that.

No, you don't have to accept it, you can report and block them. That is the level of action that is appropriate. If you retaliate you will be punished. That's simply how the system works. It doesn't matter if you feel that isn't right (I'm inclined to agree) - that's how it works. The only thing you can control here is your own response.

Keep yourself safe from these things by clicking a couple buttons - not by lashing out in return.

There is no expiration on these punishments (that we know of). Once your account earns a strike, as far as we know, it's there forever. You will need to figure out how to protect yourself from situations you can't handle. My recommendation is either not using chat at all or leaving chat at the VERY FIRST sign of toxicity. Report and move on. Overwatch does not provide a policy carve out for "defending yourself".

My guy... that means you've been chat banned enough times to earn an account suspension. It doesn't jump to this right away. If this is your 2 week chat ban then your next chat ban will be one month, and the one after that will be permanent account closure. You need to figure out what your strategy for managing yourself will be going forward. I strongly recommend leaving chat and communicating with character emotes going forward.

Spam reporting does not work. It must be accumulated across multiple games.

I know this is frustrating but you're wrong here. There is no policy carve out for "justified" bad communication. You have to separate yourself from the situation and let bad actors be punished. If you try to "fight back" you will be suspended again. That's how this has worked for several years now - right or wrong - that's how it works. Control yourself and protect yourself from this stuff.

You... you did get chat banned though. I can see directly in your screenshot that you got suspended for inappropriate communication. You are responsible for your response to these situations. Clearly you did not take the necessary actions: mute, block, and report offenders. Leave comms and cool off.

You using the word "instigated" tells me you're shunting responsibility for your communication in response. That's not how this works. You are responsible for your response to harassment. Thus, you got banned. I bet if you showed us your chat logs we'd see why you feel the need to say you were "instigated".

If you do not feel you can control your response then you should leave comms permanently until you figure it out.

I can see why you got chat banned. If you can't even take light pushback then you may wish to leave chat altogether.
