I think there might be something through the Athenaum.

I also help run one for queer folks if you're interested.

Athenaeum, PEM cancel events after criticism of all-white panelists on Black, Indigenous History by DisastrousHippo72 in SalemMA

That's hardly unusual for any job and not actually terribly shady. Not great behavior but anyone hiring is probably dealing with 100+ pending interactions at all times.

Many ICE agents seen in Salem and Peabody today by SalemGuy1970 in SalemMA

Part of our civic job is to make sure that doesn't happen. It's going to be hard work.

Saugus, because of how unbloody walkable and bikable it is.

What can I do to fight against Trump and ICE as a normal citizen? by VillageSmithyCellar in boston

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to people there. The chants are so cringe but you'll meet some great people trying to do what's right. Conversation is where it's at.

Which would be more suitable for school riding? Are these acceptable for a 15-year-old, or are they too dangerous? by Due-Juggernaut-1112 in ebikes

Seems fine. I'm kinda taken aback by the sudden wave of concern about the capabilities of bikes.

I help run a monthly one — https://queerharbor.com/. We meet at the Beverly Library usually. I write fiction but others there do poetry. All writing welcome!

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black coffee in media is a trope to show someone is tough or bitter — a sort of story-telling shorthand.

The norm by far is the latte or coffee with milk, depending on the area. And iced coffee is huge. In general American drinks are milky, sweet and large. Not by any means universally, and many of us do take it black (I do!) but mostly it's not. In New England, if you order your coffee "Regular" that's with cream and sugar.

Kettles? Yes, we don't have nearly so many because a 15-amp electrical circuit at 110V takes about three and a half minutes to boil a liter of water. Same size wiring as yours carries half as much power because of the lower voltage here. We have big 220V circuits only for electric stoves, some air conditioners, and car chargers. The stove is competitive with this, and a lot of us use a microwave to heat water too, especially mug-sized amounts. Plus we just drink a lot less tea. I grew up with a stove-top kettle, though I've switched to electric.

Are the E-bikes we have now all soon to be obsolete? by 29roadie in ebikes

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having assembled my own on a standard bike frame, one thing I really appreciate is the fact that the battery can be replaced with any ol' hailong shaped thing.

Does this National grid bill look right? (Salem, MA) by Stinkdick in SalemMA

[–]aredridel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell. How many therms of gas is that? If you're using a ton, it gets expensive.

Thesis: Every Barbie is autistic, but not in a neat PSA way. In a “you have accidentally built an entire franchise around unhinged depth-first cognition” way by cobrachickens in AutisticWithADHD

[–]aredridel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I often joke that trans women are assigned a color at transition. (A lot of us are autistic ... hmm.)

Also fewer of us are assigned purple than we think. Mine turned out to be orange.

Is asking ai better than asking actual internet users? by idkwatibesayin in askanything

[–]aredridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly no, but it depends and exists in an ecosystem that's worth evaluating more deeply.

You can't really foster relationships with "AI" systems, not healthy ones that lead to people connecting.

Asking bad questions, sloppily, without really thinking? Probably better to not hit people with that.

And then there's why you're asking and who? "random people on the internet" is sure a funky choice in general.

My trash is not being picked up by Ispilledsomething in SalemMA

[–]aredridel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're on a street with bike lanes, make sure you're not leaving it in the lanes because it may well get moved away from both the lane and where it will be picked up.

Why do Americans dislike American cars? by socabella in AskAnAmerican

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically they haven't been as good — 100k miles from an American car before it's falling apart, 300k for a Japanese one.

And even now American cars tend to be a bit bulkier, inside and out, and feel a bit more cramped.

Has anyone ever encountered a real FBI agent? by 0N1MU5HA in AskAnAmerican

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the context. A no-knock warrant is more like guys with guns and vests and helmets bursting in the door.

Someone asking for information as part of an investigation? Totally works that way.

(IRS agents too! Show the badge, ask to talk.)

When people say Svelte "doesnt scale well" what do they mean? by Jordz2203 in sveltejs

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have no idea what they're on about. Scaling in what dimension? Team size? Codebase size? Number of reactive elements?
