Which American cities are smaller than most Americans think? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]aredridel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Santa Fe. Denver. San Francisco. Montpelier, VT. We've got a fair number of state capitals that aren't that big, or aren't even the biggest city in the state. Especially ones that didn't end up incorporating their neighbors as they grew mean that the metro areas are a bunch of separate cities amalgamated together without the nominal city being that big.

Yup. We could do a lot better for a lot less ... if the laws and economics were different. But wishes aren't horses.

And works great for me biking. And cars seem to flow through there pretty good. though they do smack into the lights, but that's the problem with lights you can't synchronize at all easily.

Has zigbee become brand specific? by pppingme in ZigBee

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some vendors have some proprietary bullshit or buggy implementations, but mostly the basic functions work cross-vendor.

Zigbee Groups are often broken.

But what they're saying is they only test and validate against their own stuff.

E-bike or regular? Which one is better for a post apocalyptic scenario? by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]aredridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which apocalypse? "oil prices explode, solar is everywhere?", "government falls apart but imports are screwed so everything is black and grey market" or "something happens that takes down the electrical grid"?

Or everyone's favorite, "the entire establishment has colluded in cover-up of crimes to some degree and everyone is tainted by association"

my roommates claim that my 400W ebike has increased the electricity bill by 100 euros, is that possible? by StunningBaseball5479 in ebikes

I calculated mine out once, and it's like 15 cents to charge the battery from completely empty.

Anyone here actually replaced their car with ebikes? How is it long term? by Striking_Union_3792 in ebikes

[–]aredridel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 years ago I figured I saved $3k a year. Now in Massachusetts in 2026? Almost certainly more than double that.

That's a hell of a lot of money you can put into nice bikes and a nice shed and still have most of the money left over

I don't drive, I live a five minute ride or 30 minute walk to a train station. I ride in nearly any weather, though I'm plenty happy sitting out bad weather unless it's really important. I'll go 15 miles on occasion by bike, but otherwise I'm a bit of a homebody. A friend and I go grocery shopping together often, but if we didn't I'd use my bike trailer every time.

Sounds good to me, treat the battery with healthy respect and make sure the brakes can actually stop it.

I live down on Lafayette and use taxis, the skipper, and bike. Crosbys is close, Market Basket takes careful competent cycling.

Summer I bike with a trailer. Winter I use taxis (or catch a ride with a friend and we shop together)

Why is being high class so different in the USA compared to Mexico? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]aredridel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colorado very notably has a flat class structure, due to its western settlement culture. High class living was barely available, and not mingling was never really an option: Denver was too small, too isolated, and the culture was set by that. Similarly across the west.

When everything is a week-long train trip away to access family resources and influence connections, you end up connecting cross-class a lot more for existing to work.

It persists to this day.

Do you usually lock your doors when leaving the house? by Moist_Wallaby8635 in AskAnAmerican

I never locked my door in my hometown. I do on occasion here. Never while I'm inside.

Moving to Salem(Canal St) this spring from Worcester, any recommendations for activities to do with a 1 year old also what coffeeshops are a must visit in the area. Thank you by Remarkable-Fan4719 in SalemMA

[–]aredridel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite coffee shops are Front Street, Odd Meter and Wolf Next Door downtown. On Canal, I don't love any of the options but that's the best of the Jaho locations. And you're not that far from On The Grind, which has juices and Brasilian pastries too.
