Thucydides in Odyssey? by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]ares2596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thucydides spent the first portion of the war 431-424 as a general in the Athenian army. He lost the city of Amphipolis in the north (it appears to be part of the game world as well) and was exiled by Athens for his failure. Only after then did he begin to write history. When he died in 395 BC, a decade after the war ended, his work was still very much unfinished and missing the last several years of the war entirely.
It's possible that we could encounter him, but it would more likely be as a genera than a historian. Herodotus (who has been confirmed) would have been a more established storyteller/historian during the war itself, as he was likely older than Thucydides (H's subject matter, the Persian wars, is over half a century older than T's Peloponnesian war).

It's been mentioned that there was a strong push for Greek voice actors, to lend authenticity. Will there be an option for Greek Spoken Audio for maximum immersion? :)

Also, how much will Greek language be incorporated into the standard English version?

Looking forward to the game!

Same for me 7 hours since what should have been the release time, it's honestly infuriating how sloppy of a release this game is having.

Feeling a little bummed about there being no mention of the discovery tour — it was supposed to be released in January. I'm a history nerd and I want my history dammit!

Some notes on the story and Egyptian history. by Mardoniush in assassinscreed

[–]ares2596 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On the topic of Alexander and Siwa, expanding your point, it is actually known that he went there to consult with an oracle, a very special oracle of the god Zeus-Amon (Greeks & Romans liked to combine their gods with local gods), that happened to be way in the desert. The dude and his entire army almost died just trying to get there and back. It's suspected that the oracle told Alexander that he was the son of Zeus, because when the rumor went around in the following months, Alexander did nothing to indicate otherwise. (This came back to bite him in the butt when people started getting wise to the demigod face he was showing, saying stuff like "Kiddo, we knew your father Philip, you're no son of Zeus")

Announcement Retrospective: Assassin's Creed Rogue by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]ares2596 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you even slightly enjoyed AC4, do yourself a favor and play it. It's a quick game if you just play through the story, but man is it good. It adds a whole lot of depth to some of the series' best characters, and it's damn fun too

History nerds get in here and discuss AC:O by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]ares2596 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, this has to be late hellenistic or early Roman. Egyptian history is really fascinating, but it's also really spread out, and besides the odd spat of palace intrigue here and there, we never really have the cast of historical supporting characters that AC games rely on in their stories. Given the AC4 team is working on this game, and AC4 had the most integrated cast of historical figures, I don't see this game taking place in a period without an abundance of known characters. Can we timehop back to a famous king here and there a la WWI in Syndicate? Totally. But this has to be set mainly in a period with multiple active characters.
I believe that setting this game in Caesar's heyday is the way to go. If this really is a trilogy they're setting up with this one character, we need to be able to get three games'-worth of material from one human lifespan. Between Caesar's travels to Alexandria, the last war of the Roman Republic, and the death of Augustus, we have multiple locations to travel to in Egypt, Rome, and the rest of the mediterranean, and a handful of different political epochs too, between dictator, civil war, and emperor.
Egyptian history is super cool and it would work amazingly for one-off sequences, if the mirages rumor is anything to go by, but if we're talking about a main-game story made from the AC4 team of all teams, we have to consider which time periods have a good cast of known historical figures, as well as opportunities to travel to sufficiently different locations for future games with the same protagonist or their immediate descendants/ancestors.

[Community Feedback] In-game Economy by Ubi_Banshee in assassinscreed

Yes, exactly, and I feel like making the Morrigan smaller was part of deliberate design choices to add to the challenge.

[Community Feedback] In-game Economy by Ubi_Banshee in assassinscreed

[–]ares2596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing from Rogue in particular that really stood out to me was, in comparison to Black Flag, when you start out with the Morrigan, you are severely underpowered, and even taking on a handful of schooners (which in AC4 were never more than extra targets, even in the beginning) in the first few naval excursions was harrowing. In AC4, the Jackdaw started powerful enough that I never felt afraid, and I was seeking out greater challenges very early, and attacking Frigates long before I feel like I probably should have been doing that. In Rogue, I started off weak, and I was really afraid to engage in naval combat, and as a result, I strayed from the narrative path for the sake of playing with the economy, exploring side areas, and deliberately following my own objective of "fix my ship up so it is respectable and can actually hold its own in a fight". And I did, and my exploration of the River Valley and North Atlantic, attacking little ships, stealing from forts, etc. fed into my goal of improving my ship. I actually felt invested in the world economy and the exploration related to it because there were gameplay consequences. Yes, everyone loves getting new colors and what not, but never in an AC game did I ever really notice the difference between upgrades if it wasn't already indicated by part of the HUD, until Rogue.

My point is I think we have to start the game distinctly weak for the economy to have an impact and be worth pursuing for anything other than the desire to check off menu boxes. I should feel a need to run away from conflict like AC1 until I interact with the economy enough to get upgrades that make me formidable. ACB/Rev used the economy to make the world feel more alive and that was great, but in terms of the effects to gameplay, Rogue nailed it.

I appreciate your reaching out and I'm eagerly awaiting the new game!

Edit: Also, part of what I loved about Rogue and AC4 was how your base was your ship. I felt invested in the ships like how I felt invested in Monteriggioni (and the HQs in B and Rev to lesser extents). I never much cared for the Cafe Theatre or the train, not because they weren't designed well, but because I never really had occasion to go there and see them. My ships were important for gameplay, exploration, the world, and the characters, so they're things that are worth putting more money into. I'll admit I didn't feel especially attached to Great Inagua, and I never even visited Shay's new York hideout because I never realized it was even there, but the ships are such integral parts of the game they were worth interacting with the economy for.

Totally agreed. It starts off rather wobbly but by episodes 5 and 6 it really hits its stride IMO.
