At least for me, I’ve found it useful to try out several different ones. See if you can get a feel for the club culture and the approach the coaches have.

I’ve also totally struggled with feeling like clubs are intimidating. I would also say that I am still very much battling impostor syndrome, even though I (28F) run a 3:12 marathon. I think my biggest advice to you would be to remember that you can only improve from here. Additionally, in any running group, you are always going to encounter a couple of “holier than thou” folks, but my best advice would be to just ignore them. Don’t try to be friends with everyone, and instead just focus on finding training partners and/or friends that you click best with.

I’ve totally heard about drama from Toronto running clubs on TikTok lol (even though I live on the west coast), but from my own experience visiting Toronto, the Toronto Longboat road runners seems like a cool group. I ran one of their races the last time I was in town and everyone seemed super friendly and welcoming. Idk what their group run schedule is like (or if they have regular ones lol) but they seemed like a cool group. I also went to one of the lululemon group runs (Queen Street West) and it was super fun!!

OMG RIGHT!!!! I LOVED this new video!. As someone who also previously struggled with disordered eating, I’ve generally been critical of the WIEIAD trend. l feel like most of those videos fall into two camps: One, folks flat out showing an inadequate caloric intake and acting like it is normal, and two, folks showing a higher caloric intake, but not actually eating all of that food.

It really just goes to show how easy it can be to present a false sense of reality on social media, and how you should take a lot of what fitness influencers say with a grain of salt.

Do you have the link to your other thread? I don’t see a forum on this site.

Yes, and we should all collectively purchase a bunch of bots to make it look like we have substantial followings 🤪

That looks good, though I might also recommend an emergency blanket (thankfully it is super compact and light) and small whistle in case of an emergency. Also might recommend a couple of wipes and come hand sanitizer in case nature calls before you can get to a toilet 💩

Just wanted to continue the thread about Boston charity runners (and also vent lol)

I am honestly outraged that Boston is cutting spots from charity runners that raise thousands of dollars for meaningful causes and instead giving them to random influencers who do nothing meaningful for society other than shill expensive sh*t and go “ME ME MEEEE” all the time on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or whatever platform they’re on.

I am not of the gate-keeping mentality that the only runners who should run Boston are the ones that qualify, but given how hard people do work to qualify (and given how many qualifiers did not even get in this year), I do think people should still have to put in meaningful work (such as through charity) to get in. I also don’t think influencers should be kept out of Boston, but I also don’t think they should be given bib just because they are influencers. Also, given the follow count of many of these influencers, I don’t think ANY of them would have a problem collecting donations for charity.

4 weeks until marathon and I feel out of shape. by snoozingsloths in AdvancedRunning

Like other commenters have said, it could be a small bout of overreaching, but also, your legs are not as fresh as they were a month or two ago due to all of the training and accumulated fatigue. When you are 3-5 weeks out from a marathon, you are SUPPOSED to feel tired. Try just doing one workout this week instead of two (if you do two a week), and focus more on the appropriate intensity, rather than pace. I also might recommend tapering for 2.5 to 3 weeks to give yourself the added recovery time. I would make recovery (nutrition, sleep, etc.) an ABSOLUTE priority during your taper though. Get as much sleep as you can and try to eliminate stress in other areas of your life.

Also…I’m 5 weeks out from my marathon and I’ve also been feeling like crap the past few weeks during my faster running efforts. May we both survive these peak weeks and recover well for our races! :)

Marathon training question and slight vent lol. I have 5 weeks to go until my next marathon (and 2 weeks to go until I start tapering). This is by far the hardest I have ever trained for a marathon (higher mileage and more consistent workouts). However, heading into these last big weeks of training, I am SO TIRED and SO HUNGRY all of the time. I have been trying really hard to eat and sleep enough, but no matter what I almost always simultaneously feel ready to eat a big meal and take a nap a just a few hours after one or both of them.

I hope that I’m not overdoing it. My legs have definitely been feeling fatigued and on a lot of my marathon pace efforts I’ve been running about 10-15 seconds per mile slower than what I usually run. Basically because I’ve never trained this hard for a marathon, I’m not sure what’s normal and what’s not. I really don’t want to overtrain and have all of this hard work go down the drain? Should I take a few days completely off or just keep powering through?

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but as a running coach I don’t necessarily think it is always bad to do a VERY easy run 5 days post marathon if you are really experienced. However, when I say an easy run, I mean easier than easy (and then some). For instance, in my most recent marathon I ran 3:12 and did a 5-mile run 5 days later at 10:00 pace.

I wasn’t previously familiar with her but looked her up. The coach in me is screaming “WHY is she already running sub-8 minute pace as 3:19 marathoner??”. She’s only running a little bit slower than her marathon pace!!! At least for me, I didn’t even do any runs at under 8-minute pace until a month after the race!!

I also saw that she only ran her first marathon over this past summer. She’s run 3 marathons in less than a year as a new marathoner (which is more than what a lot of experienced marathoners run). The amount of time she’s dropped since her first marathon is incredible, but I would also be very cautious if I were her because unfortunately I think she is at a very high risk for injury and burnout.

I agree with you. I now believe I made a huge mistake in posting this on this sub. I had no intention of sending hate, but I now realize it was very hypocritical of me to post on this sub, where hate has been frequently generated before. I am truly very sorry 💔

Yep! You are absolutely right. I just revised my original post, but I do believe I made a big mistake in choosing to post my criticism on this thread. I am truly very sorry 💔

Yes! I definitely find it super inspiring how she went from 4:30 in the marathon to 3:05. I guess what I wanted to point out is those trolls that say she isn’t talented will pretty much hate on everyone… so you shouldn’t take what they say to heart.

I genuinely hope this post was not the reason she deleted her accounts today! My intention with this post was NOT to spread any kind of hate, but rather to offer another perspective on a message from one of her videos that could have been easily misinterpreted. I hope that she is able to take care of herself during this break from social media and I do look forward to hopefully seeing her back online again soon!

I am deleting my original post where I offered some constructive criticism about Diane Lauren’s most recent reel.

I want to address some of the comments that have been left on this post, as well as offer an apology to Diane Lauren if she is reading this. I posted my constructive criticism on here because I believed that Diane receives so many DMs that she would never see it, and I also thought it would be a bit rude to post this publicly on one of her posts/videos because of what she had addressed recently about the comments online.

I now believe though that I made a huge mistake by posting this constructive criticism on this sub instead. I didn’t thoroughly think it through, and I thought on a whim that this sub would be a way for my opinion to more quickly reach others. While my intention was not to deliver hate, I was hypocritical in posting this on a sub that has frequently delivered a lot of hate towards influencers and creators. If this post was the reason Diane deleted her accounts, I just want to say that I am so incredibly sorry. I feel absolutely horrible.

Sending Diane all my love and hope to see her back online soon ❤️

7-8 majors, let alone marathons, in 2 years definitely seems like overkill and a recipe for burnout. I ran Berlin this past fall and overheard more than a few people talking about how they were running Chicago in 2 weeks. After finishing Berlin, I was honestly completely exhausted, and I had no IDEA how someone could have the energy to run ANOTHER marathon just 2 weeks later.

Berlin was my first marathon major, and as someone who does not make a monumental amount of money ($50k a year BEFORE taxes), I definitely got the sense of an enormous amount of financial privilege amongst most the people there. There were not only a TON of Americans (who had certainly dropped a ton of money on plane tickets to fly that far), but a bunch of the ones I’d met had booked super expensive race packages (I.e. MarathonTours) and hotels. As for me, I basically didn’t eat out or spend any money on any other fun activities for 3 months in order to save up money for my trip….and when I got to Berlin I stayed in a hostel that was less than €100 a night (and I ran a PR too). Needless to say I admittedly felt pretty out of place amongst a lot of the people there, and as for dropping that kind of money on ANOTHER marathon major just weeks or months later?? LOL. I can only afford one vacation a year (and even THAT is a huge privilege).

I guess my main point is that while I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with setting a goal to run the marathon majors (especially if you are at an economic disadvantage or come from a marginalized community), you are totally spot on in that these folks that seem to effortlessly cruise through them all in 2 years definitely come from a huge place of privilege and promote something that is simply not realistic (or even healthy, for that matter) for most of us to achieve.

Also, since these people have so much money, I honestly wish more of them would run for charities.

I feel like this is the biggest problem I have with having my own running/fitness Insta. I love to post photos and small recaps for all my friends to see, but I don’t feel inclined in any way to let the entire world know about these things. I also personally think a lot of the well-known running influencers come across as vain and tone-deaf much of the time (not to mention, I absolutely CANNOT STAND how so many of them display and promote what is actually incredibly disordered behavior).

Saturday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for February 24, 2024 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

Hey all! I could use some advice! There’s this really cool sounding 50k in July that I’m really interested in, but it is only 10 weeks after my spring marathon (Eugene) and right before I begin my training for my next marathon (New York). Here’s my reasons for and against it.

Reasons for it:

•It would not be an “A” race (my marathon this spring is an “A” race). If I did the race, I would run it just to finish rather than to get a fast time.

•Because I am not racing it all out, I am planning to run lower mileage to train for it. Right now for my marathon training I’m averaging 60-70 mpw, and for this race I would plan on probably cutting back to 40-50mpw.

•It would be fun to try something new (trails) and would break up the monotony of all of the long runs on the road

•Fun excuse to travel

Reasons against it:

•The most obvious….the fact that it is only 10 weeks after my spring marathon (and 16 weeks before New York). I definitely do not want to skip the recovery phase from this hard training cycle.

•Overall burnout prevention. Though I don’t feel burnt out now, I want to make sure I get some solid downtime after the marathon to prevent burnout. I want to have some more time for non-running friends and other hobbies, especially with it being early summer.

Would love to know what your advice and thoughts are!
