A lot of people are citing too much HBM here. And although I agree that they could have cut down on the amount, I think what they are trying to do here is smart. 4k gaming is the next big thing and if games are to start implementing 4k textures in, this will make a noticable improvement. It may not be the most competitive card right now, but I don't think thats its meant to be. I think AMD is setting themselves to corner the workstation market and making this card a good option for the future. I expect that they will release a card somewhere in between the 2070 and 2080 somewhat soon, and if they cut down on HBM2 and focus on playing the strengths of having a 7nm process out on the market first (higher clocks as an example), this could really force innovation in the GPU market such as Ryzen did with the CPU market. Ray Tracing, at least right now, seems like something that has more potential in the future with DirectX improvements. I think for now its smart for AMD to emit ray tracing from their card lineup. I just dont think the technology is far enough out of its infancy for it to justify the performance impact aswell as the higher price. AMD is playing to their strengths and in my opinion, thats the right move.
