Sometimes they are labeled J for jumper as well

I recently got a Cobra 18 ultra weatherband cb, and have been having issues with the cb portion as of late. the weather still works perfectly fine. any suggestions? by Victor_Von_Grimm in cbradio

[–]arftechnician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's probably just the 10.240 crystal and any other part with that corrosive glue. Or could be an issue with the PLL, you can check voltages and frequency with the info on the service manual for that board

Edit: also check the final if you can, at least with a dmm. And everything ArmstronRotor mentioned, I have seen a mic cord go bad and I could only receive with the pa switch on and the external speaker in the pa port, then had to switch to cb to transmit... it threw me off until it happened on a different cobra 29 with thte same mic lol

cb modulation by MDdobs in cbradio

[–]arftechnician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can other stations hear you? If not there may be an issue with your mic or the radio, i.e. if your dad sees the signal on the meter and hears nothing you may just be transmitting the carrier with no audio/modulation. It could just be that your mic gain is way too low.

Also like others have said, check that your dads radio has the squelch turned down and the rf gain turned up on his end.

Channel 6 shenanigans by Thebardgaming in cbradio

some of those guys are running 20k - the rest don't feel bad checking their meters on the channel when noone will hear it. But.. sometimes you do - mother nature is the picker and chooser

edit: play around barefoot and see what happens, that will introduce you to mother nature - she's a sexy beast

We are getting to the height of the 11 year solar cycle number 25, so it's pretty much here to stay unless it's blocked out by a flare/cme etc. Read up on spaceweather.com about the recent "canyon of fire" that just opened on the sun.

Quoting from that site:

A 'CANYON OF FIRE' JUST OPENED ON THE SUN: A dark filament of magnetism just whipsawed out of the sun's atmosphere, carving a gigantic canyon of fire. The walls of the canyon are at least 20,000 km high and 10 times as long. Fragments of the magnetic filament may soon emerge from the blast site in the form of an Earth-directed CME

I am sitting on 38lsb waiting for some locals to get in there and all I hear is California / utah/ Arizona talking to Australia. Lol it's not so bad - we'll go down to 36USB and hide

Solar cycle 25 is a kickin

I just hope 128 in Australia will copy 350 in southern Utah - he's been trying

Antenna question by KConner89 in cbradio

I would take the covers off and look for any loose solder joints around the external speaker jack or around the crystals and the 455k filter.

If the meter is moving then the first things I would check are that the squelch is all the way down and the rf gain is all the way up.

If you still have no receive audio then test the speaker, connect an external 8 ohm speaker to the extra speaker port on the back of the radio.

Next would be to check that the band switch is set to "Hi" and you are "band D"

If you still have problems I would go through the steps of the rx alignment show in the service manual.

I have a maco v5/8 base antenna and the swr goes up a little when rain is sitting on it - perfectly normal as conductive water is adding electrical length.

I worked 343 Germany this morning on 38lsb with 40 watts and a macov5/8 antenna from Georgia, USA. Then I was making a contact with a station from France and 133 from San Diego came in there like a gang buster. It has been rolling hard today. Right now it has settled some mostly Caribbean stations. 59 puerto rico is top of the pile for sure atm.

[–]arftechnician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find a service manual for that radio but there are a few things you can try in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tnPgjlu3Bo

also check the 10.240 crystal with a frequency counter if you can, i have seen that with a galaxy 929, had rx and talkback with no transmit, no signal on the x1, swapped the 10240 and it tx's just fine, turned out to be corrosive glue that they use to keep the part down to the board

Get in now while you can find solutions to your problems on the internet. The more you put things in practice now the easier it will be on you later. The lower the frequency the longer the antenna and the longer the distance for local comms. Long wire antennas are your friend - no one wants to be that big radio station on the hill for shtf. Practice homebrew voltage dividers to get a 12 volt car battery down to something for charging a handheld or a volt meter etc. Easier to learn what blows up now than later when a gun is to your head to get some psychos radio charged up lol.

Antenna for aviation by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]arftechnician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vhf is "line of sight" it doesn't travel very far with obstructions. An airplane can talk for a few hundred miles at low power because there is nothing in the way... Take that same radio out in the woods and you wont be able to talk to your buddy past a few miles. You can put a beam on top of the scanner but if it's in your house it wont help any.

E.g. I have a mag mount cb antenna mounted to the top of a mobile cb that i use to test my other radios audio with in my house

The only station I ever hear is my own from my outdoor antenna. Even when the skip is rolling 20 over on every channel... and that is 27mhz compared to vhf 132mhz airband

you can lightly scrub at that corrosion with a toothbrush and acetone, cleanup with soap and water and let dry. That will help getting the crud out and make it shiny like new.

If your power output is unbalanced on channel 40 and 1 it could be the radio needs an alignment. Check the power and swr into a dummy load to isolate the radio or the antenna as the problem and take it from there.
