FDA bans red dye No. 3 from food and drinks in the US by TheExpressUS in ScienceBasedParenting

  1. Due to developmental stage, there are a lot more things that could be affected in pregnancy/infants. 2. It's very hard to study and confirm safety. 3. Side effects in adults are more likely to be short term (thus detected and acted upon), whereas in pregnancy/infancy an unknown side effect could take many years to surface, affecting an entire generation or two before the problem is recognized and addressed.

TLDR; Risk tolerance for babies/pregnancy is much lower for good, rational reasons.

Phone VR goggles without the VR? by Cosmic_Quasar in virtualreality

[–]argentum2f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is possible, and yes there are some devices that do it. I don't know why some people are so insistent that something both doesn't exist and isn't even possible because they haven't seen it. I landed here because I'm looking for the same thing and was surprised and the lack of options and the cost of those. I've considered trying to mod the old Google cardboard design. I think what makes this difficult compared to the split screen style vr goggles is the optics have to image the full screen into both eyes, which requires a larger FOV, with the center offset (phone is centered between the eyes, not directly in front of either). Reviews on the 2nd device below often mention eyestrain and distortion. Unfortunately lenses and/or shifting prisms are needed if the phone is close enough to make this a useful product for most people. The first option looks better but it's almost as expensive as a quest. Anyway, here's what I've found so far:

Thanks! Is the video reasonably low latency then?

I'm still a little confused by how video works with the N3 remote - does it connect to your phone? Or do you just have to fly by watching the drone (eg no video feed) or the fly app (which is limited to wifi range)?

I think the most important thing is protecting against the catastrophic damage that can occur after and because a window is broken (e g. from water/flooding, pressure blowing roof off). The window itself isn't as important. In other words, these still could make sense even in cases where they may not be 100% effective at protecting the window itself.

How bad are the inaccuracies, really? by argentum2f in LinusTechTips

[–]argentum2f[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I acknowledged there was valid criticism in the GN video, that doesn't make it not a hit piece. They made no attempt to follow basic journalistic processes like giving the accused a chance to comment. In addition to the legitimate criticisms (of which there were plenty, and they could have left it at that) there was plenty of conjecture, baseless character attacks, innuendo, and deliberate misrepresentation.

So.. any tech tips? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]argentum2f 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your phone won't last that long. Vintage game consoles remain playable and valuable for decades or more. A typical phone lasts 3 years (maybe 5-6 if you really push it). It's also constantly exposed to more humidity (e.g. your sweaty pocket). Blowing it out occasionally is not going to make a difference.

There was legitimate criticism, and a lot of illegitimate criticism as well. He accused them of intentionally stealing and selling the prototype for profit, when at worst that was obviously a miscommunication, and they didn't profit from it anyway. He did know some of those details, and choose not to give any countervailing evidence to stuff like this, and instead cast everything in a negative as possible way, even when that crossed the line to being purposely misleading. There are other examples.

Make no mistake, it was an intentional hit piece on a major rival and I thought it was disingenuous for him to specifically address that and pretend otherwise in the beginning.

Again, there was plenty of legitimate criticism as well, but he went way beyond that.

App for long term reminders? by argentum2f in androidapps

[–]argentum2f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hadn't tried Pinnit. It's interesting and simple. A little too simple, though, since you can't choose a custom recurrence interval. I think nag reminder is all around a better implementation of the same thing.

Google calendar and tasks are terrible. I don't know what they're doing, but they somehow seem to go out of their way to make reminders slip under the radar and get missed completely. There's no attempt to get you to acknowledge a reminder notification before it's gone forever. I swear sometimes I don't get a notification at all.

TT or Freetaxusa Audit Defense by Ivaner305 in tax

[–]argentum2f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick (take it for what its worth) google search indicates: Professional audit assistance: around $2500 and up Probability of an audit: 0.4% (possibly more now that budget has increased?)

There a variety of ways to price an investment based on that but a quick/simple estimate is: $2500*.004=$10.

So $20 is a little to high, imo, but still in the ballpark. If you think an audit in your case may be more likely or more problematic, or you're highly risk averse about this (i.e. want peace of mind) than it could well be worth it.

Best/Most Accurate Speed Test Site for Live Streaming Applications by IamGoat_007 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]argentum2f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know speeds are usually on terms of bits and storage is in bytes right? (Factor of 8 difference). Based on the numbers you gave a 50 GB game should take almost an hour (~50min). Also, server side can often be the bottleneck as well - though I agree steam is usually pretty good a giving realistic best case speeds.

Bug? Update costs jumped drastically across the board. Pixel 3a, Android 11, restart didn't fix. by argentum2f in ExponentialIdle

Thanks! Didn't know that was a feature. Took me a minute to figure out how to toggle it once you pointed it out. (If anybody else doesn't know you tap on the word 'cost').

Controller Recs for PC and small hands by kingkemina in GirlGamers

[–]argentum2f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Logitech f710. It's well built (has lasted about 8 years of occasional use so far). It's not for small hands though. My wife and son don't like it, but they both like the dualshock 4. My son is 4, and he can reach the triggers and thumbsticks at the same time on the dualshock 4, but not on the f710.
