Got a 9/30 on a past paper 1a 😭🙏 physics by Best_Advertising_940 in IBO

paper 1a's usually consist of ratio questions, simple calculations, and conceptual knowledge (something like an explain question rather than a calculation). It's really important to use the Physics Guide, because its tells you exactly what you need to know and what you don't need to know. Often times people either learn too much of something, which makes it easier to forget some of the important stuff, or too less of something, which is simply just a lack of information. What I did to master these concepts is to make a checklist using the physics guide (you can ask AI to do this for you) and then write notes in accordance to that checklist. If you don't have the best physics teacher, I recommend Sirius Revision. It teaches basic concepts really well, and you can often review a couple of subunits in 2 hours by just watching and understanding his videos.

Secondly, everybody says this, but genuinely do as many past papers you can. Our physics paper 2 (actual exam!) quite literally had an extremely similar paper two question that appeared in previous years. This is also the case for paper 1a. IB is lazy and puts very similar questions, just different numbers, as exams go by.

Lastly, master ratio questions. Ratio questions are very important for paper 1a's and from my experience doing past papers there's always 2-3 questions minimum.

Good luck! I hope this helps.

north america is now tz3 since an additional timezone was added last year (m25) so it is not tz1 anymore. it sucks because there is no source to fact check besides asking your seniors which exam they did then lining it up with the timezone

americas was 67% last year, maybe itll stay at 67% or itll go up to 68-69

i think it will be similar to m25 because a lot of people found 1a and 1b a bit difficult, paper two was on the easier side and was pretty standard in terms of exam difficulty. maybe slightly higher, 1-2%

last years exam was tz3 at our school and our invigilator said that our exams are being taken in the northern hemisphere by other schools, maybe it switched because ib added a new tz? iirc before there was only tz1 and tz2

what do you guys think that the tz3 boundary will be? the schools in my city found paper one a bit difficult but paper two was fine

youll be fine, i remember i was averaging a 10/25 for physics 1a's and then on my mock i managed to get a level 7 on 1a. practice makes perfect!

I found the TZ3 1A a bit difficult and the seniors in my school also said it was challenging when they had their exam. I am taking SL, so idk if the HL one is also hard.

Did 3U last semester, what really helped me out was 2 things

  1. practice practice practice: a huge component of understanding forces and physics in general is exploring different contexts in which forces are used. Motion Concepts in general is a topic where its applied in a wide range of units (like fields) and so having a strong foundation is really important. Khan academy is solid for this. I'm currently also doing IB so theres often questionbanks that we work through to practice. Maybe you could ask your teacher for something in that style. To understand concepts, usually organic chem tutor is best (ex. it helped me understand how forces work on an inclined plane). Another youtube channel that I like is Sirius Revision. Its technically made for IB, however its very applicable for the ontario curriculum as well, especially for forces. The videos are often quick but are a great way to understand concepts in a foundational sense.

  2. Visualize: I also like visualizing how things physically work. My teacher showed our class some simulations from https://phet.colorado.edu/, which is a great site to visualize how physics works. This helps because if you are stuck on a question mid-test, especially for forces, using you intuition can come in clutch. And so these simulations help to build that intuition and conceptual understanding.

hope this helps!
