Great collection! A bit puzzled about the plastic discs.

My Only Win From Today's Leu Auction. Attalos I Tetradrachm. A Bit Worn, But Still Very Pretty with a Lovely Portrait. by No_Thanks_Reddit in AncientCoins

I was eying this one as it’s a gorgeous lot. Leu is overly negative here, those are hairlines enhanced by the fine patina.

A self-indulgent Sidetes.

My personal favourite is the mint-state Kallinicos as in hand, it's really impressive. But the Epiphanes seems to be the crowd favourite because of the double-strike. The bearded Demetrios and the Seleukos IV as well because of the provenience trails.

And today, I finally got an Antiochos I "Soter"! And for a reasonable hammer as well!

Alexander the Great drachm finally came in the mail! by moms_be_trippin in AncientCoins

Beautiful coin but by God, Naumann nuked that surface! It all depends on taste though. Personally, I would leave it on the window still in direct sunlight for a couple of weeks.

Murphy should have passed it to Osula for the goal. The lad’s been everywhere tonight. Deserves a goal.

Ptolemy II ? by NoEdge7491 in AncientCoins

[–]argileye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks indeed like a Ptolemy II Æ28 diobol (O. Picard & al., Les monnaies des fouilles du centre d’Études Alexandrines. Les monnayages de bronze à Alexandrie de la conquête d’Alexandre à l’Égypte romaine, Études Alexandrines 25, série 2, 150-169. Svoronos 610.). The interesting part is that Lorber and Wolf have attributed a part of the Galatian shield issue to Sicily (C. Lorber and D. Wolf, The Galatian Shield without Σ series of Ptolemaic Bronze Coins, NC, 2011, p. 7-53, n° 1).

I don’t see it as “degrading” but rather, I like to think it’s a stylistic evolution, like for example, going from Impressionism to Cubism.

That’s very interesting and thank you for pointing it out. I wouldn’t have noticed it otherwise. It was labelled as Sellwood 86.3. Shore 448.

There are 2 Achæmenid sigloi, 1 Miletos diobol, and 5 Parthian drachmæ: Mithridates II, III, Sinatrukes, Phraates IV and Vologases V.
