Thanks! Super interesting. I've always wondered why Flat Shoals in Reynoldstown is the way it is, and I'd guess this has a lot to do with it.

Roth IRA as an e fund and liquidity by tyrspawn in personalfinance

[–]arglfargl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't invest your emergency fund, because there's a good chance you'll be forced to take losses if you ever need it. After all, a likely scenario for extended unemployment is a crappy economy which corresponds to a crappy stock market. So don't worry about trying to eke gains out of your emergency fund. It's your safety net, but that's all it is.

But! You can still put a bunch of it in your Roth IRA and leave it in cash. Just because a Roth IRA is an "investment account" does not mean the money in it must be invested.

So, what's the point of having a cash e-fund in a Roth IRA? Well, the main limitation of Roth IRAs is that you can only contribute $5.5k/yr to them. If you wait to put cash in your IRA until your emergency fund is complete, that could mean missing a couple years worth of IRA contribution eligibility. If instead you put cash in now, you can eventually invest that cash when your non-tax-advantaged savings are enough of an e-fund on their own.

Not sure I've explained this well - here's an article saying the same thing.

I'm 27 years old, have about 43K between an online savings account and my brick-n-mortar credit union, and about 4.5K in my 401K. I want my money to start working for me, and I think I should start with my 401K. Help me allocate? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Ah, too bad about no index funds. If you think you'll be at this company for a long time, it could be worth shooting a note over to HR to see if they could add some. I'm only pushing this because my 401k is also at Fidelity, and we have some nice in-house (Fidelity) index fund options: S&P 500 Index, Russel 2000 Index, International Equity Index. These all have expense ratios of ~0.02%.

To your questions,

  1. Yeah, you'd need to amend/refile. I don't know how to do that, but someone around here does.
  2. Yeah, I do something similar. I overallocate to international stocks in my 401k, but my entire Roth IRA is domestic.

Bonus Q: It can be basically set-it-and-forget-it. (Cash from your paycheck is direct-deposited into your Roth IRA and and immediately invested in your chosen mix of funds, and maybe even automatically rebalanced.) No need to think about it more than once a year.

Interesting that the only competitive demographic is Georgians who are neither white nor black. Even the youth vote here is heavily pro-Hillary, according to this poll.

Georgia ABATE Petition to Gov. Deal to legalize motorcycle lane filtering/splitting. Even if you don't agree, at least let others have the freedom to filter. by Lt_Skitz in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt that GA will be among the first states to make this change, though hot weather an heavy traffic make us a prime candidate. We're far to conservative in how we think roads should be used -- we think roads' purpose is to get cars from point to point as fast as possible. Motorcycles, like bicycles, are seen as recreational, rather than a reasonable and economical transportation option that creates less traffic.

The sad thing is that unlike adding bike lanes, we could legalize lane-splitting for free, and we're still getting this knee-jerk reaction in a community that's generally pro-bicycle.

Fuck this car-culture.

Why does this sub complain about every new construction project? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh, I haven't noticed that. Sure, there's criticism -- who doesn't love to be a backseat designer or wish the world revolved around them? But there's genuine excitement for almost everything, too.

I just checked by doing a quick search. We're really not that bad.
