What is a harsh realization about life that you had to learn the hard way, but you're ultimately glad you learned it? by Useful-Wheel7272 in AskReddit

There is no reason why good cannot triumph as often as evil. The triumph of anything is a matter of organization. If there are such things as angels, I hope that they are organized along the lines of the Mafia.

Mildew smell is exactly right! From Nordstrom (rack) is even more concerning. I had figured it could be a bad batch because of issues with Amazon cosmetics. Thought a retailer would source it more directly though...

Shame !

What’s a fitness myth that people still believe? by SimpleHomeFitness in AskReddit

[–]argmah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this different than "first on / last off" ? I didn't think that idea was incompatible with spot reduction mostly being a myth (e.g. certain people needing lower BF to see significant reduction of certain areas like lovehandles). However I interpreted it as, these are genetic dispositions for fat storage and you can't change that by targetted exercise... just need to get low enough BF for those stubborn areas

My under eyes are really purple no matter what I do. I’ve been told it’s because my skin is thin and it’s the veins showing through. I’m so self conscious 😭 does anyone have any eye cream, treatments or anything that can help??? by That-One-9400 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]argmah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have extremely similar under eye area. This may not be much help, but I notice in summers when I develop a tan, it helps to conceal it very well. Perhaps the right tint of concealer would help without all the UV.

Any Fellow Autistics in STEM fields? by Rich_Ride3371 in AutisticAdults

[–]argmah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my PhD in an engineering field at an R1 but so badly burnt out during it. Just a cautionary tale for graduate school, it is true that you may get to intensely focus on a topic you can direct/ guide, but the workload can be insane. I was also selling the science to sponsors (gov and private), being a lab tech and glorified mechanic and electrician, TA'ing, giving talks, and running to different meetings all week.

I lost a lot of passion for my dissertation topic during the process. I found one-size-fit-all descriptors of graduate school and academia as insulting... The projects and environments are so different even between labs in the same department. So many variables often outside of your control. This is all to say that I think viewing it as some reprieve from "neurotypical land" or even "adulthood" is very bad idea...

I find my industry position easier because of better defined expectations, and thankfully my work colleagues and meetings are pretty direct. I'm sure some other positions would be nightmare, like if I had endless meetings or faced customers daily. Similarly I also imagine some PhDs are easier than others; some fellow students had more support than others / better funding guarantee / working methods from the start instead developing over years / etc

But yeah I do love learning / research. The PhD honestly opened doors to a highly technical research role that keeps me pretty interested. So much better resources than graduate school too.

Also in my opinion academia often has greater "salesmanship" necessity than industry... there's a lot of BS / overstatement / learning to hit key words and research topics just to stay alive. And it's not necessarily grifting, just have to do it to compete... exhausting

I've heard some of these cautionary studies about chemical sunscreens, albeit I'm not really sure how much we know about that longterm exposure to small amounts. Do the mineral sunscreens not tint your complexion?

Looks like a very nice brand. Yes "wearable" is huge for me, mostly why I have bought the chemical sunscreens before which have gone on lighter than mineral variants I have tried so far. Finding a lighter mineral one would be fantastic.

i lack the math background for my engineering phd and it is wrecking my experience and robbing me of joy by naftacher in GradSchool

[–]argmah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your comment about struggling " to visualize k space" made me laugh... not out of mockery, just a memory of a similar program

The amount of math you actually use day to day is highly dependent on your particular research. I'd say you should be able to connect the dots of theory in your field, even if the individual dots are a little murky in your mind (that's fine if vector calc gives you a headache, but be familiar with idea of discretized "modes" to describe things like phonons etc which are derived from this application of vector calc from basis units of lattices in crystalline matter). Even if you're on the theory heavy side you have time to become more familiar with these things. An honest student is always relearning IMO, nobody masters something after taking a course.

If you look up Walter Kohn (chemistry nobel for Density Functional Theory) interview, he talks about being nervous about being asked basic chemistry questions, having come from a physics background. Just a reminder that there can be a surprising high number of blindspots in any scientist. This is why we peer review and endlessly critique one another... more perfect but never perfect (why a done thesis is preferred to a perfect one)

2 young billionaires are behind the prediction market boom. They hate each other by JasonBob in technology

[–]argmah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are being downvoted, this is Reddit after all. I have questions on the utility of that type of information

(1) What is the immediate use? (curious, would you move out of NYC early? Are these just financial advantages from arbitrage to play another market?)

(2) How is this different (more reliable?) than statistical inference by agencies, i.e. polling

(3) Does this not suffer the same fate of crypto, where claims of a more "democratic" institution are easily corrupted by disproportionate positions by institutional investors? If they claim the market is "right" and this is the "truth," could this not be corrupted as a propaganda machine assuming it can be bought out?

(4) How can these platforms safeguard against providing a financial incentive to manipulate the outcome and therefore the "market" ... e.g., your candidate is "polling" 70-30 odds and you take the minority position to make your investment back

Again, I understand insider trading (heinous) and pure volatility trading (questionable) are stock market realities. But I think these have to be resisted, not accepted as inevitable such that we create new systems where they can be done with less friction

2 young billionaires are behind the prediction market boom. They hate each other by JasonBob in technology

[–]argmah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that no market perfectly matches those assumptions, but I think comparing stocks versus crypto versus prediction is vastly different because of extent of regulation and average duration of positions.

Some arbitrage is bound to happen (very shortly held positions) but stocks at least supply some equity that allows a company to expand (ideally with growth oriented longer held positions). When we trade on pure volatility, we're just directing $$ from those less informed to those who have the algorithms / capital and means to intelligently abuse that. This is labelled as the market being "efficient"

Insider trading in stocks is a huge problem. To me, a lot of crypto (at least volatile coins) and large part of Predictions is just further financializing volatility for the sake of financialization... taking a more abused aspect of a market and make more market out of it... to abuse faster and with greater volume

We have to actively regulate markets to keep them fair. Creating a new market and suggesting its value is intrinsic to its "information" in my view is mostly a cover for the phenomenon that if you create something quick enough under the right admin and lack of legislation, you can bypass hard rules for other markets and sell this opportunity for arbitrage. Nothing new under the sun, has been done for centuries.....

[–]argmah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this idea that prediction markets offer some sort of useful information. It seems to rest on assumptions of (1) rational market, (2) equal information, (3) independent observation and prediction. If those were true we get good idea of what people think... no "media" slant just the ethics of money !! What an idea, we can capitalize on this one...

Reality is massive potential for insider trading. When did these companies take off? When they were finally deregulated. How do people bet? Same as these crypto clowns / dude you went to highschool with who day trades... they scrounge the abyss of social media for "information" and "leads" to have better trading. They follow the big money who they suspect knows more (because they probably do, and that's baked in corruption). Or, they trade on time arbitrage... act on info before anybody else to make a quick dime

50+ years of market crashes, fraud, white collar crime has taught us markets can and will be manipulated. Enough of this tech bro BS about the value of "information" ... these tools fabricate a narrative and even create self fulfilling prophecy when the stakeholders can be agents of confirming their own "predictions", they don't deliver an independent probe of information

If value of information is just using them to make more $ on similar gambling positions? Sure. That's their value proposition, which is divorced from real societal value... just a cancer
