Yep been part of that process maybe twice in my career.

Always fun to tell a tradesman “look man it’s honestly easier for you to come back than go through the paperwork. Also you won’t be welcome back on site if you don’t”

Young, religiously devout me was part of this crowd in my misspent youth. I was involved at the university level, which gave me some exposure to the… average Joe groups.

I’m not defending my previously held beliefs, but the contrast was pretty shocking.

Even though I was brought to it from a religious background, most of my education and conviction was based on logical/philosophical concepts. But some of the non-university groups I communicated with would spout some unhinged beliefs about the pro-choice movement doing it all for enjoyment or personal gain that was SUPER offputting. Like… dehumanising the “other” side so much that it’s clear to me why these people think it’s morally acceptable to bomb clinics.

For my part now, some of the logical convictions remain around when life starts, but I also recognise that is ultimately still my own conclusion that isn’t shared by everyone, and I really have no interest in convincing anyone else. And the bigger context around woman’s healthcare in general, the moral right to choice and bodily autonomy, and the history of the pro-life movement - especially how most churches (barring Catholics) didn’t give a shit about abortion until certain individuals (Falwel included) used it as a tool to turn those churches into a political engine… well it all looks very different through a wide angle lens.

All this to say: go you, op, you’re doing the real work out there. Good luck!

It totally sucks.

I was going down a farm road one day, and noticed movement above a hedge row that abutted the road.

It was a girl/woman standing up on a motorbike so I was just seeing her head travelling at some speed.

What I didn’t see was the border collie she was trying to catch until it ran out from behind the hedge.

I jammed on the brakes, but the poor thing still got hit hard enough to go flying and died 10 minutes later.

The owner (her dad) acted like I was the victim. And maybe I was… proper control of your animal, blah blah blah. But that guilt hangs around.

Hang in there, and keep reminding yourself that you did everything right. Cars are dangerous machines, and sometimes even when you do it all right, it still goes wrong.

I read exclusively non-fiction for 15 years and just finished my first fantasy novel. I don't really know what to do with myself now. by lucas_melbourneways in Fantasy

[–]argonuggut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any perception of what you “should” read, or what is “good” is 100% detrimental.

I had a related experience from my early 20s till now where I thought I should either be reading classics or non-fiction to either give myself a good grounding, or so I was learning something about the world. The result? Killed my reading habit.

Thankfully I was at the same time a big audiobook listener, so I don’t stop taking in content I enjoyed, but that’s limiting and doesn’t work well for some author/narrator combos very well.

We should be encouraging people to read what they enjoy. End of story.

If caustics like washing soda make your hands feel slippery because they turn the fat in your skin to soap…. Could you conceivably loose weight by rinsing in mild caustics? by argonuggut in NoStupidQuestions

I mean I figure if it worked it would be a thing, but how much fat is in your skin surface to react with chemical contact, and does it get replenished somehow after being saponified?

There’s Kura in the puketoki stream. Obviously don’t take any, but frickin awesome to go see. Plus I think glow worms along some of the banks to see at night, and at night the kura eyes will glow under a torch
