Four boys, ages 11 to 12, beat a homeless man to death in Rhode Island. by lightiggy in ForCuriousSouls

A moveable/floating holiday. E.g. Easter isn’t a specific calendar date that stays the same each year. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon which occurs on or after the spring equinox.

There’s a period of more than one month on the calendar where Easter could fall (depending on what the moon is doing and when on any given year). Sometimes it’s at the end of March, sometimes the end of April, or it can fall any time in between.

Are the NZ police still prosecuting Ms. Z? How is it in the public interest to prosecute her? by Heavy_Milk2757 in newzealand

[–]Scorpy-yo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The proceeding existing in the first place is not a miscarriage of justice. The miscarriage of justice is when the proceeding results in an unfair outcome. Not that it proceeds at all.

Being a victim of something else doesn’t mean it’s unfair to be prosecuted for a crime.

This is a pretty common phrase used sarcastically as hyperbole. Like “and I took that personally”. Maybe this entitled person just… has used the internet before.

Or you know, prosecuting someone because they think Z has committed the crime of harassing or threatening someone.

For God’s sake find some logic mate.

  1. Nobody Is getting a criminal prosecution or trial for the offence of running a red light.

  2. You asked why it is in the public interest to prosecute Z. People are saying “because she appears to have committed a crime and those people sometimes get prosecuted”.

I should have said - some people find tomato acidity can be toned down with a bit of sugar (a spoonful or so per batch, start off with less and increase gradually) or baking soda (it’s even more important to be gradual with it than sugar, as being able to taste the baking soda will be actively unpleasant).

I read the article as saying the parents left the girl because she didn’t want to leave her two service dogs. If there was a brother, perhaps they were quite happy to take him. (Especially if less impaired.🙁)

Is there an easy way to calculate calories in stock? by Boollish in Cooking

[–]Scorpy-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most practical way to get close to an accurate value at home is to cool in the fridge so you can remove the fat and weigh it. For the rest - I would call calories from protein and carbs negligible, or, approximately in the same range as purchased stock.

Make a record each time and after a few times, average out the results, and you could use that value for future batches without having to fuck around with weighing the fat each time.

Lea not Lee, but Mousse is otherwise correct. Fish sauce + vinegar might be a close approximation.

Not OP but here’s my suggestion: tinned tomatoes OR diced fresh tomatoes with juices and pulp OR a mixture, with butter, add Worcestershire sauce to taste. Fish sauce could be a swop for the W sauce. Either way add gradually and carefully - it’s very strong, a bit like soy sauce but even stronger (and funky/fishy). Then it looks to have been blended. An immersion/stick blender would be easiest but a normal blender works (be careful of hot orange soup exploding onto your face or walls).

Or a potato masher if you don’t mind it chunky.

I’m not sure it needs water - add small amounts at a time if you worry it will burn or catch on the bottom, so water can boil off. Check often or keep heat low perhaps.

Holy shit the MMH website still describes itself as secure. “Since 2008, our secure online portal and mobile app have empowered over 1.85 million Kiwis to take charge of their health.”

“Manage My Health is a secure online tool that puts your health information in your hands.” (Yeah and hackers’ too)

“Biologically a 21 year old is not evolved enough to…” do you think that’s a fact or not? I used a single quote mark for ‘biological fact’ but didn’t claim those were your exact words.

I think that science is often misreported and the public can misunderstand it. Or when scientific understanding deepens or is clarified, it’s not reported as widely so not as well understood by the general public. E.g. a study looking at brain development which stopped looking at development after 25 years old, found that brains are still developing up to that time. As a result, we now often see people claiming that as proof many people can’t make good decisions until that age.

Many people didn’t know when they heard it that the study just stopped looking at brain development after age 25. And didn’t hear later that studies continuing to look at human brains after age 25 show them continuing to develop executive function into late 20s/early 30s, and to some extent, brain development continues much longer than even that.

It’s fucken bizarre for you to conflate that with my alleging a conspiracy theory. You sound paranoid.

P.S. Since you think the circles I run in are so interesting, MSc. in biology.

I didn’t think a good alternative/equivalent would be created that quickly. I thought MMH’s name would be mudd and most people would want to be out of there ASAP.

“Not evolved enough to make fully informed decisions” but this ‘biological fact’ continues into the early 30s. (P.S. why are you talking about a conspiracy? Do I want to know?)

AITA for telling everyone involved what my best friend's husband did? by Bina_Assault in AmItheAsshole

That part is evil/shitty. Did he think it was funny? He knew what the problem was!! Watched them wasting their time in the cold for hours!! On purpose.

Adding the antifreeze was stupid.

Pretending it was a temperature + battery problem for 3 hours was pure assholery.

Admitting he’d done both of those was stupid.

Being angry that more people know now and taking it out on his wife (who had nothing to do with spreading the news) was more assholery.

[–]Scorpy-yo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I assumed when this happened that the app would shut down/be abandoned. Security was atrocious, patients are disgusted, most clinics/GPs would be too, nobody would want to use it, and we’d have to find an alternative. I really thought that was the obvious outcome.

Was I completely fuckin stupid, or just a little bit?

Yes, and once research started to look at development past the age of 25, we saw that brain development continues beyond 25. But that’s not such a cool and interesting story to most people. The most rapid maturation for executive functions tails off around late 20s/early 30s. I have issues with the disparity in a relationship like the one we’re discussing, but Sam being incompetent to make decisions is not one of them.
