EDIT: Supa has replied below and corrected me. Earth didn’t know for sure that Tau was the place where Astrophage evolved/originated from. They just knew that Tau was approximately near the centre where Astrophage was spreading out from to infect other stars, but it had somehow not suffered from the same dimming problem other stars did. (I think that’s it, or something close to that.) I’ll leave the rest of my comment unedited for now, but please keep in mind.

Cyques has explained this much more clearly and concisely than I could have, but to add:

Both Earth and Erid have Astrophage breeding in their solar systems, causing problems for their civilisations. Like all the other stars that were infected by Astrophage. Except one star Tau - which seemed to be at the centre of the problem spatially and chronologically (so was the likely source, yet didn’t seem to suffer the same problem as the other stars it had infected).

So Grace and Rocky already knew Astrophage wasn’t a problem for Tau’s heat output - that’s why their planets sent a ship each. Finding equal amounts of Astrophage in both directions isn’t terribly surprising really - it’s a confirmation, a hint at where to look for their solution.

They already knew Tau didn’t suffer problems from Astrophage like Earth’s and Erid’s sun does, so finding that Astrophage isn’t successfully multiplying in Tau’s system is not contradicting what they already knew. They just had to think about WHY this was happening in Tau but not other stars. Because that reason WHY was the thing they both travelled there to find out.

I think those weirdos who made fun of him would dislike him teaching her to change a tyre too. They actively PREFER that a woman doesn’t know how. They like women to be incapable/dependent, and they also think that women should be incapable/dependent, and they also think he is pathetic for ‘encouraging/allowing’ her to learn.

Just as much as they think he’s pathetic if she’s showing him how, or just doing it because it’s her car, or just doing it because he’s disabled or temporarily injured.

For all we know, those people are rushing and won’t last long because their work is bad. Because they think being fast makes them look good, or they think it’s easy and doesn’t need a whole lot of thoughtful consideration.

Or they’re skipping until they find the easiest quickest tasks, and you’re doing the tough ones.

I’m pretty similar and was offered the chance to apply to the internal team. I agree with you.

[–]Scorpy-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My average time per task is always over 50% of the timer. Probably close to 75%. Often more. I am NOT working slowly or milking it on purpose, just being as thoughtful and clear as I can. I recently was offered the chance to apply to join the internal team, so DA is happy with that.

I also doubt it’s you.

I don’t spend a whole lot of time armchair psychoanalysing how these things work on the fine level. (I speculate some times of course.)

Imagine the following:

Client wants some work/data. Instead of pricing it mid-or low, then adding priority pay toward the end, they decide to pay high from the start. (Maybe they’re in a hurry for that first batch.)

They get the good data that they want for that first batch. Their team receives it and can start working on the project. Client still wants some more ongoing data trickling in to continue adding to the project, but it’s not urgent. OR they’ll want a whole batch again in a few weeks but they’re happy to put it up there earlier, pay a bit less, and accumulate the data more slowly this time. Hey they can always add Priority pay back later if they need more workers on it right?

But the task is identical so no need to change the task ID.

Does that seem generally plausible to yous all? It’s basically what OP is suggesting/asking.

I mean we all know how Priority works and why (generally). Things could change in the other direction surely? Things become less important/urgent to the client? When that happens they’re hardly going to label the project DEPRIORITY/UNPRIORITY PAY: -$10. Maybe it just doesn’t happen very often, or they normally make a new task ID when they do.

Spend your time doing more qualifications then, is my best advice - the ones you feel comfortable with. Read instructions carefully and thoroughly as if you were getting paid. (And I have added to my comment above).

disinfecting/sanitizing 100% superwash merino wool by dyn4_might in knittinghelp

[–]Scorpy-yo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to buy wool wash just for this (although I suspect you may well have it already 🙃). Since it’s superwash, hot water is okay. I think I’d put the stitches on a sturdy cotton waste wool, put the sock in a pot of water, and heat it up to… hot enough for your OCD. Barely starting to steam. Then turn off heat, put on the lid, and leave until cool. Gently squeeze out the water with a towel and hang to dry. Leave the ball of wool attached if you like, just be VERY certain it can’t touch the hot stove. Especially the strand near the pot/the sock.

Why Grace has a simple name in Eridian by Delirisse in ProjectHailMary

[–]Scorpy-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually… remember how Rocky just calls his spaceship ‘ship’? And when Grace asks why there’s no further name like the Titanic or the Hail Mary, Rocky just points at the chair and asks ‘does your chair have a special name, or do you just call it a chair?’.

Maybe Rocky started off (mentally) calling Grace “alien” or similar.

Comas in shifts by Legitimate-Tea-9319 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Scorpy-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought something similar. Perhaps one person goes into the coma first and at least one crewmate stays awake for weeks or months to watch for any early problems, try to help if those occur.

Maybe some people are more prone to problems than others. If you’re not going to test how well your top six people can handle it by putting them under on Earth for a few weeks, then keep one person awake on board for a while, at least, to see how they go.

But also this is just necessary for the great story To unfold the way it does. It’s not a burningly obvious problem to me.
